Friday 21st December 2012

Dear Parents/Carers,

As the end of term draws to a close, it’s opportune to reflect on just what a great term it has been. It’s fair to say that whilst a great deal of fun has been had by all, there has been some powerful learning in school throughout the past 15 weeks. Every day in school brings new opportunities to develop new skills - be they academic, creative or social - and I feel blessed to have over 300 beautiful children at Cookridge who wholeheartedly throw themselves into every experience with zest, enthusiasm and determination. Our role as teachers is a pleasure and a privilege whilst ever this is the case, and success is inevitable. So, I begin the final newsletter of this half term with a huge thank you to the people who make our school great – your children. This is, however, a newsletter of many thanks!

Christmas Fayre
On Tuesday, our annual Christmas Fayre was a great success. The Friends did a wonderful job in their preparations for the event and their hard work ensured it went off without a hitch. Special thank-you’s to our new Co-Chairs of the PTA Rebecca Herbert and Michael Land, to our new secretary Barbara Nixon, to our new Treasurer (who counteth the pennies!) Dave Nixon, to our wonderful grotto designer Wendy Bannister, to Friends everywhere who gave of their time and of course to Santa, who made time in his busy schedule to come along and support our Fayre once again. I am also very grateful to parents who donated chocolate, bottles and raffle prizes, and who took the time to visit the stalls and spend a pound or two. Final thank you’s to staff, all of whom supported the Fayre brilliantly in their creation of Christmas cards, crafts and games... What stars you all are! We raised a grand total of £1031.25 - an incredible amount - and Friends will meet with our School Council in the New Year to begin the conversation about how the children would like to spend the monies raised across this year... More news on future Friends events coming soon: it’s going to be an exciting year!

Baby News!
I am delighted to share Mr and Mrs Smith’s happy news. Baby Maisie was born early on Sunday morning, weighing a delicate 6lb10oz. She is absolutely gorgeous (of course) and we are really looking forward to seeing both Mrs Smith and Maisie in school soon. Congratulations Mr and Mrs Smith – enjoy your first Christmas together!

Christmas Writing Competition
Last week in assembly, we shared a Christmas themed story. Not THE Christmas story, but ‘Jingle Bells’, a Nick Butterworth story about two mice and THAT cat. During that assembly, I invited the children to celebrate their skills as a writer by writing their own Christmassy themed story where anything MIGHT happen. Many children are keen to do so, and our first writing competition has been born! Closing date for entries is Monday 7th January – our first day back – and the winning entries will be shared in assembly, on the website and a PRIZE awarded. Do encourage your child to think about entering the competition – excitement about writing is just one of the ways we are seeking to improve standards in writing across school, and your help in doing that would be much appreciated! From January, we will also be nominating ‘writers of the week’ to keep talking about writing high profile across school.

Leeds Ahead’s Make the Grade Programme
We took delivery this week of boxes full of free books: now THAT doesn’t happen every day! These were a gift from various businesses supporting Leeds Ahead’s Make the Grade Programme and are aimed at encouraging Y5 pupils to read more before their important SAT’s Year. The books are fantastic quality and we are very grateful for the gift. If you are aware of any other sources of free books or equipment for schools – including schemes you are aware of through your own place of work – then please do let us know. School funding is dwindling... Our desire to provide the best resources and materials for our children is not!

Message from the Chair of Governors
As 2012 draws to a close, I wanted to bid all our families “Happy Christmas” on behalf of the school Governing Body. It is important, periodically, that I relay to many different sectors of the school community my appreciation for their individual contributions to our school. First of all, I recognise the hard work of the staff of Cookridge Primary School, a staff who consistently demonstrates their commitment to our children. Specifically, I want to thank staff for their hard work during the Nativity performances we have recently enjoyed. I thank fellow Governors for their support and acknowledge the many hours of time each individual contributes to this role. I would also like to thank you – the parents’ - for your hard work in the past year. We have been glad of your support of the school improvement agendas including attendance, of your efforts to support your child’s learning through reading and homework and of your support to the school by coming along to parent meetings and events. On my many visits to school, I have been impressed with the children at Cookridge and would also like to commend them for their achievements this year: well done and keep it up. We must each keep up our hard work and determination so that we may continue to see rapid improvements in our school during 2013. Best wishes for the New Year.

Attendance
Oh my – we have some work to do! For 13 weeks, we maintained good levels of attendance and kept ahead of our 96% attendance target for 2012-13. The past two weeks, however, have brought incredibly high levels of illness absence which have impacted massively on our year to date figure, reducing it to 95% and the lowest it has been since I joined the school. Fortunately, this figure can – and must! – improve as we move into 2013. Please throw the bugs out with the Christmas trees, and let’s start the New Year afresh – we need some outstanding attendance going forward if we are to get back to 96% overall.

This week, 77 children received their 100% attendance certificate for this term and today each child brings home this terms attendance letter – green, amber or red. To receive a green letter, children have met or exceeded the school target so far this year: well done. There is still opportunity for all children to get themselves a green letter - and to earn a 100% attendance certificate - next term. Wouldn’t it be great to be awarding closer to 300 children certificates for this incredible achievement?

Friday 14th December 2012

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week, it’s been all about the performances. I have had the pleasure of watching each phase enjoy entertaining their mums, dads, grandmas and grandads, and it has been wonderful to see the joy on the children’s faces as they have played their part in some top quality performances. The singing talent, loud and clear voices, the acting prowess and confidence of all of our children is very clear to see – we hope you enjoyed it. Y34 also debuted a brand new Cookridge talent – Bollywood dancing. Brilliant to see the audience participation in this one too! We all learned something new! Thank you to all staff, parents and of course the children who have entertained us all week...

LGI SOS - Save our Surgery
Last week’s LGI SOS event raised £181.20 for this worthy cause. Thank you to all parents for their generosity for all our charities this term.

Choir bring Methodist Church to a standstill!
Last Saturday, our choir had its debut at the Methodist Church, in support of their Christmas Fayre. I arrived a few minutes late to find our children (and adults!) in full voice – and the sound emanating from the hall was magnificent. The children completed a 20 minute set with great aplomb and I’m really confident this will not be the last we see of them. Well done to each and every one of you!

Christmas Dinner
Christmas Dinner was enjoyed by over 200 children and adults on Thursday – that’s a lot of hot school meals to serve up in an hour: even Gordon Ramsay would have felt the heat! The dinner, as every day, was delicious and the festive atmosphere in the hall was tangible. The number of children taking hot school meals is higher than ever, with those switching to dinners enjoying it so much that our days of switching between school meals and packed lunches are behind us. Enormous thanks to Diane Porter, Tracy Luke, Carol Gibson, and Jackie Lawson who prepare our school meals, and to Mrs Hyde in the school office who manages collection of the dinner money each week. These ladies are unsung heroes, frankly, who work very hard on behalf of your children every single day and do a wonderful job. Thank you!

Friends
The Friday Friends group gathered again today for more preparations towards the Christmas Fayre. It’s good to see our community come together and get stuck into a project, whilst making new friends along the way. The Christmas Fayre is on Tuesday. Reception children can be collected to go down to the Fayre from 2.30pm, with the Fayre underway and ready for everyone else to join them straight after school. Thank you to all parents who have supplied generous donations for the bottle tombola, chocolate tombola and raffle. The Friends group will be meeting the School Council in the New Year to talk ‘business’ with them, and ascertain precisely what we are raising funds for this year. Remember, last year’s fundraising led to the installation of the spiderweb in the playground. Every penny spent at the Fayre will go straight back to your children through investments chosen by the children, for the children. Make sure you come along!

Sports News
Basketball Club is cancelled next week due to the Christmas Fair. Year 2 Active Club and Y4/5/6 Boxercise will run as normal. Y4 swimming is off next week, and for the first week back after Christmas. With the closure of Holt Park Leisure Centre, when swimming resumes on Monday 14th January we will be travelling by bus to Bramley leisure centre to enjoy our lessons there for the remainder of the school year.

Stamp Appeal
Mrs Russell appeals for your used postage stamps! This is one that will cost you nothing - except for a few minutes - and yet our collective efforts could be of great significance. If you collect up your used stamps over the Christmas period and pass them to us in the school office, we will pass them on to Mrs Russell so that she can put them to good use raising money for Martin House Hospice.

Cubs
Pinfold Lane cub group has places available for new members. The group meet each Tuesday from 6.45-8.15pm. If your child is interested in joining, please contact Cheryl.land@sky.com

Miss Cowles returns!
Next week Miss Cowles returns to school after her maternity leave. Miss Cowles has returned on a part time basis and will be working across school, in the first instance. We’re looking forward to having her back – wonder if she’s looking forward to coming back?! See you Monday, Miss Cowles.

Wintry Weather Procedures
With our first brush with icy conditions in the past few weeks, I hope that you are beginning to notice safer conditions as you make your way into school down Tinshill Drive. Mr Lucas is now extending the area he grits each morning to include the pathway outside of school, as well as a clear pathway into school. Please note – the full expanse of the playground will not be gritted before school so please supervise your children carefully during this time.

As the snowy season begins, I will recap for you procedures for school closure notification. Whilst we endeavour to remain open during any period of wintry weather, it is the Head teacher’s responsibility to complete a risk assessment to inform any decision to remain open. This risk assessment is based on the condition of the school site and the availability of school based staff for work. Please note the following procedures should a closure be deemed necessary.

A decision will be taken as early as possible and communications sent to all parties. Any delays in making a decision will often be as a result of awaiting news of the respective car journeys of school based staff. Please do not attempt to contact school during this time as it is essential that phone lines remain open.

If school is to close, a TEXT message will be sent to all parents and carers registered on Parentmail. Please supply your Parentmail details to office staff if you haven't already if you wish to be included in any such urgent mailing.

A message will also be posted on Mrs B's Blog via the school website and on Twitter. I will also post here a statement which indicates our intention to OPEN as soon as I am able to confirm that to be the case.

We will notify Radio Aire/Radio Leeds so that they are able to include our school in their updated bulletins and on their website. Please be assured that I would only take the decision to close our school in exceptional circumstances where your child's safety is the prime concern.
Attendance
Yikes! Attendance this week falls below satisfactory levels for the first time this academic year. In the last three weeks, the number of 100% attenders has fallen dramatically from 117 to just short of 80 children. We’ve had winter vomiting virus, colds, coughs, laryngitis and viruses – you name it, we’ve had it. I appreciate parents efforts in getting their children back into school as soon as they are fit and well, and understand that taking the decision to be off school is never an easy one and as a parent myself I empathise with this. Parent Mr Hoyle directed us towards this great source of medical advice regarding illness absence from schools which may be of use http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Yourchildatschool/Pages/Illness.aspx. If in doubt, of course, your GP will be able to advise you.

Next week....
It’s party time. Reception and KS1 will party on Wednesday 19th December, and KS2 will party on Thursday 20th December. Children should bring their party clothes to change into, as sparkly, spangly tops and tights are not always compatible with a frosty lunchtime! Children will eat lunch as usual, with party food and games in the afternoon. Donations for party nibbles – crisps, biscuits, buns or savoury items – would be gratefully appreciated on the day.

Our final act of Christmas celebration will be our ‘Carols Around the Tree’ service. This is an opportunity to gather together to sing our favourite Christmas songs before we go home for the holiday, and I warmly invite parents to come along and sing up! The service begins at 2pm and I really hope you can make it.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Bailey

Friday 14th December - Reception Christmas is ON!

We have just over half of the Reception children in school so far, with more arriving minute by minute in a constant trickle! The 2pm show will go ahead as planned - please be there!

Friday 14th December

Look who's in charge!

Having popped next door for a few minutes, I returned to my office to find THIS hive of activity!

The Year 1 and 2 children had really settled and got stuck into some very important work - running the school.

I was thrilled to see Honey in charge: with Miss Carr as Head teacher, and Miss Turner as Assistant Headteacher - Cookridge Primary is in safe hands!

Edie had been to see me earlier in the week to proudly show me her writing. I could not believe how much Edie's writing has improved in just 12 short weeks in Year 2: wowsers - it's amazing! And this is Honey's maths... Subtracting two digit numbers already?!

Keep up the hard work guys and one day you COULD well enjoy the privilege of Head ship.... or you MIGHT be the Prime Minister!

Friday 7th December 2012

Dear Parents/Carers,

Another eventful week in school has seen our first ever Christmas Crafts event in Reception, children participating in a rugby tournament, a whole school pantomime, children visiting Cookridge Methodist Church to decorate ‘our’ tree, children performing at the Leeds Town Hall AND today we have all been dressed in red for the day on behalf of LGI’s Children’s Heart Unit. Just an ordinary week at Cookridge! On Saturday, our inter-generational choir will be making their debut at the Methodist Church, and of course next week brings the opportunity for EVERYONE to get up on stage and strut their stuff in our Christmas performances....

LGI SOS - Save our Surgery
Thanks to all children and parents who have dressed in red and donated their pocket money towards this worthwhile cause. Governors also nominated this as the charity they would be supporting this year and have been generous in their donations. We will tot up our total and let you know how much was raised by next week.

Reception Christmas Crafts
We have been delighted to welcome into school this week all our Reception mums, dads and even grandparents who have put time aside to come into school for an afternoon and make decorations with their child. The event was even supported by Starbucks, the Village, who supplied a barista and coffee for the afternoons. It was wonderful to see parents, teachers and children work side by side to create not only fantastic quality tree decorations that I’m confident will hang proudly on some trees for well over a decade (!) but also really memorable learning experiences for our children – they will not forget the day that mum, dad or grandma came into school so thanks very much for playing your part! Thanks also to the Reception team for getting this organised – Miss Hobson, Mrs Fletcher, Mrs Arnott, Mrs Riley and Mrs Colefax really are doing some wonderful things together this year!

LMSA Town Hall Concert
Mrs Fletcher and Mrs Dawson led a contingent of Y56 pupils in their participation in the annual Town Hall Concert on Tuesday night. Our children sang beautifully and the performance was truly spectacular. These opportunities to stand up and perform in front of literally hundreds of people are rare moments in anyone’s life and it is incredible that our 10 and 11 year olds have the confidence to do so. Enormous thanks to Mrs Fletcher and Mrs Dawson who have dedicated hours of their own time to attend rehearsals with our choristers – without such dedicated staff these kind of experiences would not be possible.

Our inter-generational choir also makes its debut on Saturday. This is a new initiative led by Mrs Fletcher who has actively encouraged local, ‘older generation’ folk to come into school and sing with our children. It is beautiful to see, and sounds pretty good too! The choir will be performing from 11.40am on Saturday, and have a whole set to do. Good luck to them all!

Twitter, blogs and all that stuff!
Our Twitter account is growing, with daily tweets about our school days here https://twitter.com/CookridgePrimar . If you haven’t already, have a look or – even better – become a follower for frequent updates about our school. We’ve got just 12 followers to date – I’m ambitious for more though so get on board!

The blogs are also a great way of keeping up to date and seeing for yourself what is happening in your child’s class. Every class in school now has a blog and there are some amazing ones with almost daily posts, photos and links to online learning for your child. Again – have a look! They’re really rather good.... http://www.cookridgeprimaryschool.org.uk/children/blogs.php  My blog also includes the newsletter each week, in case ‘pupil post’ should fail on any one Friday! It now has over 10,000 hits and a steady stream of ‘traffic’ every single day, and is just one of the ways we aim to provide information for parents. If any parents have searched the website or blogs for information that is not – as yet – provided, please drop me an email and let us know. baileys06@leedslearning.net

Awards
So far this half term, each of our team point teams have earned over 1500 team points each, since September 170 children have earned their bronze award (25 team points) and 36 children have earned their silver award (100 team points) and every day I award around 20 Head teacher awards to those children who have secured ‘5 team points in any one day’. Our job in school every day is punctuated by taking the time to recognise when children are making the right choices and meeting the Cookridge Code – rule number one of which is simply ‘be the best that we can be’. It is testament to the calibre of our young people that we are awarding in excess of 6000 team point each half term. If each team point is awarded with individual acts of industriousness, effort, politeness, kindness or friendship – that’s a whole lot of ‘good’ slushing around our school!

Next week, the time has come for each class to nominate their class Learnatic for this half term – highly prestigious recognition for the children awarded by the people that matter: their peers. Good luck to all of you, and I look forward to our pizza lunch on that final Tuesday.

Pre-school assistant required
Pre-school are looking for an assistant and invite applicants from within our community. The post is full time, 8.30 – 3.00 Mon-Fri. If you are interested, please contact pre-school for more information and an application form.

Christmas Dinner
Our school meals service continues to go from strength to strength, with more pupils and staff taking school dinners every day than ever before. Next Thursday 13th December is Christmas Dinner day – so if your child has signed up for a one-off school lunch don’t forget to take a day off the lunchbox routine!

Friends
Our Friday Friends group were busy today, getting practical and creative in the run up to the Christmas Fayre. It is wonderful for the Friends group to be finding new membership and new momentum and I am sure that the Fayre and future events will be magnificent.

Don’t forget – next Friday is the day to bring in donations of bottles, chocolate and gifts for the stalls and tombolas. Next Friday is a non-uniform event to mark this occasion - so bring your goodies in readiness for the Fayre - it is only a staggering 11 days away! See the Friends blog for more details and if you want to come along to Friday Friends – please do! I am delighted to announce that Cameron Palmer (Class 9) and Alya Nadheri (Class 3) are the winners of our Christmas Fayre poster competition – Congratulations and well done girls!

Sports News
On Wednesday, a team of 12 children from Year 5/6 travelled up to a freezing Broadgate Primary to compete in a Leeds Rhinos Tag Rugby Tournament against other local schools. We narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot after two losses and solitary win. Notable performances came from Elliott Coultas, Darcy Bucknell, Taylor Barron and Sarah Khalfan. The man of the tournament, from our perspective, was Liam Jones. He scored 8 out of our 9 tries, was ferocious in defence and was an excellent and inspirational captain on the field. A BIG well done to you all!

Attendance
Our first terms 100% attendance certificates will be awarded on 17th December – keep up the good work if you are still in the running! Attendance this week is the lowest it has been this academic year, a fact which sadly immediately impacts on our year to date figure. Please help us to maintain higher levels of attendance by ensuring your child is in school unless they are too ill to do so – children can still attend school if suffering a common cough and cold, and medicines can be administered during the school day if your child is on the tail end of an illness that has required penicillin to aid recovery – just see Mrs Hyde in the school office.
