Friday 28th June 2013

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week, after a long period of illness, we welcomed back into school Mrs Brookes. It was wonderful to see Mrs Brookes brilliant smile back in the building, and Mrs Brookes clearly enjoyed being back amongst the staff and children who adore her… Welcome back: we’ve missed you!

Pinnacle partnership

On Monday morning, I had an extra spring in my step as I left the car and spotted the fantastic ground work completed by a willing team of volunteers last Saturday. First, I noticed the brilliant tidy up of the pathway adjacent to the allotment – complete with a brand new batch of shrubs. As I made my way into school, the fantastic sight of the work in the Reception playground struck me: a new planter (more new shrubs), a facelift to the shelter and some new turf made for a tidy transformation Alan Titchmarsh would be pleased with. It was a little while later Mr Lucas drew my attention to the incredible installation of THOSE giant pencils in the playground! These have drawn much intrigue this week as the children have worked out quite what to make of them. Also in the playground, several areas which presented us with a muddy problem through the winter months have also benefitted from some matting and turf which should alleviate the problem going forward. The remarkable thing about all of this, besides just how wonderful it all looks, is that this work was undertaken by a team of key people (aka top bosses!) at Pinnacle and school governors Vijay Sharma and Keith Horsley who gave up their own time, volunteered the services of family members and toiled on our behalf to create a little bit of magic for us. It was also completely free of charge with all materials donated.  Thank you to all involved, but in particular to Chris Sledding and Sean Hancock who were the pioneers behind the project.

I rarely comment upon the school building, as it is an element of school we tend to take for granted. It is, however, an aspect that visitors to school often pass comment about. It is due to the daily dedication of Mr Lucas, our wonderful superintendent, that our building sparkles like the jewel on the hill – thank you Mr Lucas… We do appreciate all that you do!

Music

Across the course of this year, Mrs Fletcher has worked tirelessly to make a very strong music provision in school even better. She has brought to school the wonderful inter-generational choir and whole class steel pan and samba provision and maintained a range of small group instrumental sessions, orchestra and  music workshop (undertaking a crash course in ‘voices’ training to quickly establish her own expertise in eliciting this hidden talent!) Next year, Mrs Fletcher extends the range of whole class teaching so that all pupils will – for the first time – be given the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. Further details of the improvements to the music provision are outlined in Mrs Fletcher’s letter, also sent out today. Please have a look at the music offer in school – its rather brilliant and far from an ‘ordinary’ primary music curriculum!

After school clubs

We really are ahead of ourselves in terms of organisation for the year ahead! Today, we send out the after school clubs for 2013-14 – and it is an impressive list which will only extend throughout the year. Please consider which clubs your child would like to attend and return your slip to school by Friday 12th July. Clubs will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis so please don’t delay! We aim to get club allocation letters out to you before the end of the school year so that you can coordinate your collection times, with all clubs due to start during the second week back in September.

Sports news

The final Key Stage 2 Football Club of the year is next Monday, 1st July. Mr Gamble would like to thank Mr El-Sayed and James Palmer for all their help this year in making the club fun and enjoyable for the children attending. He would also like to thank all the children who have taken part and the parents who have helped to support and transport the teams to matches and competitions this year. Football Club will return in September.

On Wednesday, Year 5/6 ventured to Leeds Met to take part in a racket-a-thon day. The children had the opportunity to play tennis, cardio-tennis, table tennis, squash and badminton. Despite looking tired on their arrival back to school, all the children enjoyed the day and behaved impeccably. Well done to you all!

Earlier this week your child brought home a letter regarding Sports Day this year. It is being held on Monday 1st July with Reception and Key Stage 1 in the morning, starting at 10am, and Key Stage 2 in the afternoon, starting at 1pm. You are – of course – very welcome to come along to the field and cheer them on. All children need to try and wear a coloured t-shirt for the day that corresponds to their team point team. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather. Without wishing to jinx our chances, if the event is cancelled, we will let you know via text, twitter and the blog as soon as possible. If the heavens do open, we have a ‘back up’ day for Sports Day on Friday 12th July.

Now seems an opportune moment to express my thanks to Mr Gamble for all his work in making PE a strong aspect of our school experience during this year – and for your weekly contributions to the newsletter!

Opportunity NOT TO BE MISSED!

This year, from 19th July 2013 – 12th January 2014, Leeds City Museum is hosting a major exhibition of Anthony Browne’s work.   Most children at Cookridge will, at some point, have studied the incredible books by Anthony Browne and will have been fascinated by his powerful drawings and the many hidden meanings in them. In fact, Years 3 and 4 are currently doing an 'Anthony Browne writing unit', using his books to inspire their own storytelling and they are loving it! This exhibition would be a fantastic opportunity to see some new and some familiar drawings of this amazing artist and author. I hope you'll be able to get there and see them for yourself - I know I will!

Attendance

With just three weeks to go, we are holding our nerve and this week sees a rise overall, with a 0.1% increase on our year to date figure as a result. Keep it up!

Teddy Bears Picnic

On Friday 12th July, we will be having our final ‘themed’ lunch of the year – a picnic, hopefully up on the field! All children who have school meals will be provided with a picnic lunch which includes a range of sandwiches, pizza, sausage rolls, sparkle buns and juice! Children who normally have a packed lunch can opt for a ‘teddy bears picnic’ for the day – just return the slip below to school by Monday 8th July.

Reminder
Children will spend the morning with their new class next Tuesday, 2nd July. In addition - as we did last year - there will be a ‘meet the class teacher’ session straight after school for parents to pop into the new classes, pick up a brief information sheet about the year ahead and ask any questions you might have.

Coffee Morning

Hard to believe, but it’s time for the final coffee morning of the year! Come along on Wednesday 17th July @ 9am for a catch up – it feels like a long time since the last one! I can share news of next years’ plans to make use of the Funtime room for a playgroup, so if you might be interested in making use of that come along and find out more.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Sam Bailey

Friday 21st June 2013

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week, staff all over school have been celebrating as they’ve collated end of year assessment information. It has been wonderful to be an observer of the celebratory conversations between teachers and support staff as they have seen the children surpass targets, often making more than expected progress within the past academic year. This accelerated progress is down to effective partnership working between teachers, support staff, pupils and parents and is characterised by hard work, dedication and determination. Well done, one and all!

Phonics Screening Test

Chief amongst our causes of celebration are the outcomes of the Y1 phonics screening test. This national test was introduced last year and coincided with our brand new approach to systematic synthetic phonics. You may remember we welcomed leading practitioner and advisor to the government Debbie Hepplewhite into school to accelerate the pace at which we mastered this aspect of teaching and learning. Last year, we were delighted when 70% of our Y1 pupils secured the pass mark. Results for 2013, however, have far exceeded our expectations with over 90% of Y1 pupils this year securing the pass mark. Our dedication to phonics is no longer the work of Foundation and Key Stage 1, and the impact of this 30 minute strand of daily dedicated teaching and learning is really evident in the children’s reading and writing right across school. Many individuals spelling, in particular, has – frankly – been transformed as they have mastered the tricky alphabetic code. We will, of course, be sharing news of your child’s end of year attainment and progress in the reports which teachers are currently busy writing, but I will also share news of our whole school outcomes via the newsletter as soon as we have the full picture: watch this space!

Summer Fair 2013

After many years under the direction of the beloved Mrs Willets, last Saturday’s Summer Fair marked the first one for nigh on 20 years that happened without her inimitable guidance. It was wonderful to see the event unfold in time old tradition, with all our favourite stalls making an appearance. Despite the rain, the event raised just short of £2,500 for school – money that will be ploughed straight back into events and equipment in school that government funding does not always run to!

There are many, many thanks to offer in relation to the fantastic committee who made the fair a success this year, and who have worked really hard across the year to keep the Friends group going strong. First of all, Mrs Herbert – our wonderful, enthusiastic and spirited Chair –, Mrs Nixon – our brilliant secretary and organiser - and Mr Nixon – who has taken the reigns as Treasurer. Thanks also go to Mrs Farrell, Mrs Stafford, Mrs Brown, Mr & Mrs Philpott and Mrs Bannister for their great teamwork. Gigantic thanks to Mrs Hallat, who stepped into role of chief organiser with natural flair (!),  and Mr Hallat for his work before, during and after the event. Thanks also to staff members who donated items for the staff hamper and, in particular, to Miss Streams who sourced the Nintendo DSi and Mrs Arnott who, frankly, sourced 50% of the remaining raffle prizes! Final thanks, of course, go to you – for your kind and generous donations of stock for the stalls and for coming along and having some fun with us!

Joseph Lillywhite

Our non uniform day last Friday raised over £200 in support of Joseph Lillywhite’s appeal. Further details of Joseph’s appeal are available on http://www.justgiving.com/josephlillywhite. Joseph’s family are touched by your kind donations and best wishes and pass on their grateful thanks.

R to the A to the P - Respect All People

This was one of the key messages of rapper and poet Donovan Christopher who came to Cookridge on Tuesday to work with 6 children from our Year 6 and a group of other children from Leeds' schools.  He spent the day inspiring them to write their own poetry on a range of themes from Humpty Dumpty to Respect and the importance of being yourself. Donovan delivered a fantastic assembly, full of energy and entertained all with his incredible use of words, song and rapping technique!  But most of all, the children ended the day buzzing and feeling proud of what they'd achieved! Thanks to Miss Fowler for continuing to source inspiring authors and artists and persuading them to come to Cookridge!

Attendance

This morning, 36 children with 100% attendance for the entire year received their 100% attendance certificate. This is a fantastic achievement, and should be a very proud moment for the children – and parents – concerned! In addition, all pupils who have surpassed our 96% school attendance target for this were entered into the ‘Bonus’ Chancer draw, with 10 extra pupils being selected at random to join the annual attendance trip, the details of which will be finalised early next week. 100%ers (and Bonus Chancers!).. Look out for your letters next week. Congratulations and well done!

Friday 14th June 2013

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week it’s been all about Summer Fair preparations. We’ve got everything crossed for tomorrow – the Fair is just not the same when the sun doesn’t shine! We hope that you can join us for a few hours tomorrow – bring friends and family members too. Thank you to everyone who has made a donation to the fair this week – many helping hands have spent the afternoon transforming a motley collection of wines and spirits, toys, chocolate and gifts into the stalls we know and love. Thank you to EVERYONE who has given a few hours of their time to the Summer Fair already, and to the many more of you who will be on hand tomorrow..

The NED show

On Wednesday, we welcomed the NED show into school to deliver their fun and inspirational assembly to all of our children. The NED character is based on the acronym Never give up, Encourage others and Do your best.. Brilliant values for us all to live our lives by and entirely in line with the ethos of the Cookridge Code. The show was free to school and was very well received by the children, who enjoyed the magic tricks! NED products (yoyo’s) are available to buy from the school office until next Friday.

New Reception Parents Meeting

It was wonderful to welcome into school on Thursday night around 90 parents on the brink of that brilliant moment when a child first starts ‘big’ school! Right from my first moment as a newly qualified Reception class teacher, I have attended the welcome to Reception meeting every year without fail. I can honestly say I find it one of the most exhilarating events of the school calendar… A new Reception cohort is a joy and a pleasure… 45 bundles of infinite possibility, 45 little people whose futures stretch out un-blighted before them, a team of staff and parents who want the world for their little fledglings and 45 pairs of wide eyes working out what on earth school is all about...  It’s brilliant. Welcome aboard, new parents and new pupils……

Pinnacle

As you may be aware, our school environment is managed by Pinnacle in a contract set out over 26 years. We are currently about 8 years into that contract, and the building and grounds continue to be a fantastic feature of our school. On Saturday 22nd June, the ‘big bosses’ from Pinnacle have volunteered their services to help us out with some grounds work – some planters in the Reception playground and some clearance work up around the allotment. I am really grateful to Pinnacle for offering their services free of charge on areas of the school grounds that do not fall under their direct responsibility. The brilliant catering manager Chris Tate will also be serving bacon sandwiches and a lunch to all volunteers… It’s worth it for that! If any parents (or grandparents) are keen to help out on the day, if only for an hour  – please get in touch.

Class allocations

As promised, you should this evening be receiving a letter which tells you your child’s class for the year ahead. This year, in the second year of our class allocations policy, we have been able to maintain stability for a high number of children so that they are able to make their move with friends formed over this year. It has also been possible to maintain a high level of staffing stability so that wherever possible, if children remain in the same Key Phase they do so under the guidance of a familiar teaching team. This consistency will, I am sure, enable a brilliant start to the year ahead. If you have any questions or concerns about the class allocation please don’t suffer in silence – come and have a chat: we just might be able to sort it.

Attendance

Next week, we will be informing our 100% attenders of their magnificent achievement and inviting each and every one of them to come along to the annual cinema trip to celebrate. This year, we currently have 37 pupils who have managed - by hook or by crook - to dodge the infections, steer clear of the germs and make it into school every single day. In the coming weeks, you will be receiving your child’s report which will include a statement of your child’s attendance across the year. This week… We’re steady at just over 95%, so well done. PLEASE don’t let it slip in the next few weeks… an end of year figure below 95% is not something we are aiming for!

Bikes and scooters before school

It is wonderful to see so many of our children travelling to and from school on wheels and making use of the bike and scooter shelters provided. It is very obvious, however, that the high number of children riding and scooting around the busy playground before school is becoming a problem and will lead to an accident before long. Can I please ask all parents, therefore, to ensure that children park their vehicles as soon as they arrive at the shelters and venture into the playground on foot. Safer all round, I think! Alongside this message – can I please reiterate my previous pleas for parents to refrain from having conversations about this or any other disciplinary matter with other people’s children. If you are concerned that a child is putting others at risk by continuing to ride around the playground, please refer it to a member of staff who will be available on each classroom door as soon as the bell rings. Thank you.

Diary dates for the busy term ahead

There is PLENTY going on this term. Please update your diary via the blog, where all key dates are listed.

And so… See you all tomorrow at the Summer Fair, 2-4. Cross everything for sunshine!
