Dear
Parents/Carers,
Time
is flying by.. I am going into my final week of chalk face teaching next week,
having had the privilege of working with a sterling group of Y6 pupils as they
prepare for the upcoming SATS – which we are only 4 school days away from now!
I have to say just how impressed I have been with the work ethic of the group
I’m working with – 17 children who really have given it everything they’ve got
and are absolutely ready to face the challenge. I’m going to be lost when this
teaching phase is done and dusted.. Offices are such lonely places when
compared with the average classroom! Can I extend my personal thanks to all
parents of children right across Y6 who have wholeheartedly supported the SATS
preparation by offering extra time, support and encouragement? I have every
confidence your children will be celebrating their well deserved success in
July. One final plea Year 6: PLEASE
ensure you are in school every day during the week commencing 13th
May and bring your best smile and a bucket of confidence!!!
You
should, of course, see more of me in the weeks after SATS so do call in for a
coffee and a chat if there is anything on your mind – I’ll be in need of some
company!
Robin Wood update
I
am delighted to be able to confirm that next year’s Y4 pupils will able to
enjoy the brilliant residential as we now have enough willing trekkers who will
face the Robin Wood challenge in November 2013. We will obviously hold more
information meetings for parents nearer the time but in the meantime if you
have any questions please get in touch. Both Miss Glendinning and Miss Carroll
are experienced Robin Wooders and will be happy to answer your questions...
Thanks to parents for their support of this venture: the children will have an
absolute ball!
Class Photographs
Don’t forget - Tempest will be in
school on the morning of Tuesday 7th May to take class photographs.
Funtime Club and
Little Sunshine’s Preschool - Volunteers Needed
For those of you not aware, Preschool
and Funtime (our before and after school club) were established many years ago
under a committee of parent volunteers who were committed to establishing non
profit making services which meet our community needs. The committee urgently
need new members to help in the management of the Preschool and Funtime. It
involves coming to meetings monthly and some organisational work in between.
You do not have to use the settings to be a committee member. The Funtime
Annual General Meeting is being held at school on Thursday 16th
May at 5:30pm (duration approx. 1 hour). This is an ideal
opportunity to find out more about volunteering. In particular, the
committee urgently need a treasurer to step into the role from September 2013. Refreshments and childcare will be
provided at the meeting.
It
is important to communicate the fact that should we not have a volunteer for the
above role by July 2013 then the settings cannot operate in their current form
from September 2013 and are at risk of closure. Please let Ann Sadler
– Funtime - or Julie Bird – Preschool - know in advance if you are able to
attend.
Sports News
You
will have received a Sports
Questionnaire tonight. Your feedback and thoughts are valued here at
Cookridge and we are going to use the responses from these questionnaires to
begin planning our after school sports clubs for the next academic year. Please
spend 5 minutes filling out the form, with your child(ren) if possible, and
return them to school by Tuesday. Thank you.
The
Y5/6 footballers have played 3 matches in a week, winning ALL of them. The
results were 3-2 and 1-0, both against Adel St John, and 6-1 against Ireland
Wood. Over the three matches, goals were scored by Nathan Brown (5), Elliott
Coultas (3), Jack Appleyard (1) and Liam Jones (1) with Matty Caines and
Jack Appleyard also winning man of the match awards. These results ensure
we finish top of the qualifying league and that we have qualified, for the
second year running, into the quarter finals. The final league match is on
Tuesday against Ireland Wood on the school field, keep the victories coming
lads!
PE kit
There
are an increasing number of children who are forgetting their kit on PE days.
Please help them to strengthen their organisational skills by encouraging them
to remember their things – if you are not sure of the days do ask your class
teacher, or indeed bring the kit on a Monday and collect it on a Friday. It is
vital that correct kit is worn: shorts, a t-shirt and - most importantly as we
finally get some sunshine and move into outdoor PE - the correct footwear,
essential for safety. Children who do not bring their kit will not be able to
do PE, a vital part of the school curriculum.

Talking of attendance....
Chicken Pox Alert!
Please
be vigilant as we do have a bout of chicken pox in school at the moment.
Chicken pox is a highly visible illness, characterised of course by a rash of
itchy blisters which appear quite quickly on the face, chest, back and stomach.
It is highly contagious so children who present with blisters should be kept
off school until all of the blisters have healed but no sooner than 5 days
after the onset of the rash. Please ensure you telephone school to notify us if
your child is off because of chicken pox as we obviously need to monitor this
infectious illness. It is by no means an epidemic at the moment – and if we all
respect the incubation periods we should be able to minimise the spread. Please
ensure your contact numbers are up to date as we will be contacting you if your
child’s spots appear throughout the day! As an additional note of advice,
please be aware that whilst a harmless illness which children recover from
quickly, it brings additional risk to young babies, pregnant women and those
with weakened immune systems.
