Friday 28th March 2014

Dear Parents/Carers,

It has been a wonderful week in school, largely due to the enormous smiles we have seen each day on the children’s faces as they’ve left the Mother’s Day stall clutching their specially chosen gifts! I hope you enjoy them half as much as they enjoyed browsing and spending…;0)

Strike

Thank you to all parents for your cooperation during Wednesday’s strike day. I fully appreciate the disruption that this caused and the particular issue which arises where only one member of the family is affected. I am very grateful to report excellent attendance for pupils in those classes not affected by the strike action on Wednesday, even though many told me how dismayed they were to be leaving brother or sister at home!

Pride

One of the finest parts of my role is observing the very real and very deserving sense of pride our children have. Very frequently, children show me (and anyone else who they can!) their incredible learning. Clutching the books they are reading, the writing they have just completed, the calculations they have just solved, their art work or something they have done at home, their chests are positively puffed as they recognise how brilliant they are. This week, we have undertaken assessments across school and are busy readying ourselves for the final term of the year based on what that tells us about next steps for your child. Inevitably, it is a great opportunity for the children to appreciate their achievements. If you haven’t lately, ask your child what they are most proud of in their learning: I am sure they have plenty to tell you about! And on that note…..

Parent Consults

You should, by now, have received your appointment time for the Parent Consultations taking place next week. If you haven’t – please ring or call into the office early next week so that we can offer you one of the remaining appointment slots. This is your chance to see for yourselves the brilliant things we are seeing day after day – be sure to do that flick from the first page in the book to the last and ‘spot the difference’. I hope you enjoy it!

Can I please ask all parents to respect the tight timeframes that teachers are working to during these appointments. Allocated slots are ten minutes in length, and there are few breaks built into the schedule to accommodate all parents. If you wish to discuss a matter which is likely to take longer than the ten minutes that is not a problem but please ask if you can pop back for another chat after the Easter hols, when there is unlikely to be a queue of other parents outside! Thank you.

Easter Disco

The D.J. is booked and the disco will be in full swing next Thursday 3rd April. Reception and KS1 pupils will disco from 3pm and should be collected from their classroom exits at 4pm. KS2 pupils should return to school from 4-5pm and should be collected from the hall doors. Y5/6 pupils can make their own way home if this is their normal home-time arrangement.

The Friends meeting yesterday focused on planning for the ‘Challenge Night’, a family event due to take place on Wednesday 21st May. Put the date in your diary – more details coming soon!

After School Clubs

Please note - due to the final week of term and parent consultations next week there will be no after school clubs next week. All these clubs will commence again the first week back after Easter.

Sports News

Last Friday, as part of the Sports Relief events, 15 children from our school went to watch the Leeds Rhinos play against the London Broncos in Super League. As well as being invited to the players lounge before the game where they met Ronnie The Rhino, the children participated in a relay race at half-time against 5 other primary schools. Each child had to run half the length of the field in front of a packed South Stand before passing the ball onto the next member of the team. After a thrilling race, we came second- a fabulous achievement! A BIG thank you to Mr Gamble, Mrs Horsley, Mrs Pattison and Miss Carroll who gave up their time to support the kids. The pictures – and all our other sports news - can be seen on the sports blog www.cookridgeschoolsport.blogspot.co.uk/

Sporting success for former Cookridge pupils

Mr Philpott has shared news with me this week that is too good not to share! Three former Cookridge pupils - Nicole Finn, Ellen Auty and Eden Philpott - were part of a 4 girl team that won the National under 18 schools table tennis championships last weekend. They were representing Horsforth School, but 3 of them owe it to Cookridge for the beginnings of their table tennis skills during their time at the after school club. This is just what a successful primary school curriculum is all about: igniting passion and enthusiasm in young people who go on to enjoy and achieve long after they’ve left us. Congratulations, girls!

Attendance

We have maintained our excellent attendance of 96% overall this week – well done to you all: I need to book a sunny day and those Bouncy Castles! Delightful that it is our Reception pupils who have this week bagged the highest rate of attendance at over 99% - a massive achievement for our youngest pupils in school! Bourbon will be coming to Reception for the first time this year on Monday and I bet he has plenty of people to play with…!

Friday 21st March 2014

Dear Parents/Carers,

Surely it’s not Friday again, already?

Choir

Top billing this week goes to our wonderful intergenerational choir who sang their socks off at last Friday’s OPAL event at Tinshill Community Hub. It is wonderful that our pupils are sharing the joy that the sound of music brings with many ears – we are becoming a popular booking round these parts! Keep up the fantastic work, guys!

Sport Relief

Today was a fun day in school with one very sporty Friday! All children completed their 'sport relief mile', school dinners had gone RED and there were some big lunchtime queues waiting to enjoy a session on the Wiis at lunchtime. All proceeds raised will be passed straight to Sports Relief – thank you once again for your support.

Book Fair

Children have been very proud to show me the books they have bought in the past week and I would be the first to share their excitement in having a brand new, shiny book in my hands (AND the time to read it!) My thanks to parents who visited the book fair this week and continue to encourage their child to love a good book!

Parent Consults

Parents of pupils from Reception to Year 6 should have received a letter regarding parent consultation appointments during the final week of this half term. Please assist us in arranging appointments by returning your preferences as soon as possible – but certainly no later than Thursday 27th March. Thank you.

Upcoming Friends events

Don’t forget – the Easter disco is less than a fortnight away and is booked for 3rd April. Pupils should buy their £1.50 tickets for this event in advance by returning the slip below by Friday 28th March. Reception and KS1 pupils will dance from 3-4pm, and KS2 pupils from 4-5pm. Get your disco clothes ready – it’s nearly here!

Next week, we will also be manning a Mother’s Day Gift Stall each playtime. If children would like to buy mum a little gift, they should bring their change (no more than £1.00) to the shop during playtimes next week.

The next Friends meeting is on Thursday 27th March at 6.30pm so please come along and help us plan for a family friendly ‘Challenge Night’ that we can all enjoy..

School Photos

Next Tuesday, Tempest photographers will be in school to take class and sports team photos. We hope to capture some memories of group endeavours on film – including our intergenerational choir! Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school so that their sporting team work can also be captured on film.

Strike Action

We informed parents on Wednesday this week of planned national strike action next Wednesday 26th March. Unfortunately on this occasion we will be affected by the strike and have taken the decision to operate a partial closure to pupils in Classes 6, 7 and 8 next Wednesday. This decision has been taken with pupil safety in mind and I am genuinely sorry for the inevitable inconvenience that this creates. Can I please appeal for parents of pupils in all other classes to attend school as normal on Wednesday. Thank you.

Easter Egg Competition

We will be welcoming your decorated Easter eggs into school from Monday 31st March. If you need some inspiration for your design – have a look at the blog for previous years brilliant entries!

Attendance

Oh my goodness: we’ve only gone and done it! For several weeks, we have been watching our year to date attendance figure very closely indeed as we have been a tantalising 0.1% off our target 96% for weeks. This week, following yet another EXCELLENT week of attendance, we have tipped the scales in our favour and 96% is in the bag. We have never achieved such an outstanding level of attendance so late in the school year and I heartily thank you for your efforts! I had better get on the phone and book some Bouncy Castles, as I promised!  Then we have the simple job of maintaining our 96% for 14 more weeks. Nothing is impossible! Class 3 have gone and done the business this week by notching up 100% attendance: a second week with Bourbon for you little people! Well done to everybody for achieving a first.

Staffing News

Last week I informed you about our new ‘Family & Support Team’ which will be fully established after the Easter holiday. Mrs Susan Brosnan will be joining us in her role as Attendance & Family Support Worker, and our very own Mrs Sarah Barnes will be taking on the role of Inclusion Manager in school. Mrs Brosnan and Mrs Barnes will work very closely with Mr Green – Learning Mentor in school – and Mrs Turner – Deputy Head teacher and SENCO in school. Particular congratulations to Mrs Barnes who was successful at interview from a pool of around 60 applicants. She rose to the challenge at interview and I am certain that she will continue to do a fantastic job on your behalf in the coming years. I am sure you can appreciate the priority that we are giving to this very important area of our school – getting provision in school right for our children and increasing our capacity to support our families is of the utmost priority to me personally and I am delighted that we are now in a position to begin our development in this area.

Sports News

On Monday, 30 children from Year 5&6 walked to Yarnbury to participate in a rugby festival against other local schools. The morning was dedicated to coaching, where pupils learned the skills needed for the afternoon's competition. After a quick lunch break, teams competed in a series of groups and eliminators. There were some very good individual and team performances, especially from Team A who came 3rd overall out of 20 teams! Mackenzie Tuner, Liam Jones, Ben Moxon, Cameron Barron, Darcy Bucknell and Oliver Thomas all deserve special mention for scoring tries, super tackling or just great team work throughout the day. Well done to all those involved and a BIG thank you to Mr Harrison (Josh's dad) who gave up his time to come and help out!

Last month, Years 3-6 participated in a sponsored Ultimate Dodgeball Day to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. The sponsorship money has now all been collected in and counted and the final figure raised is a staggering £1300!!! This is a fantastic amount and a BIG thank you to all the pupils, parents, grandparents and wider family and friends who supported this great cause.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Bailey

Friday 14th March 2014

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week’s newsletter is jam packed full of news of the high number of events which are coming up in the next three weeks through till the Easter holidays: there is a LOT to do!

Sport Relief

Next Friday is Sport Relief! In exchange for £1, children can come to school wearing their sports kit. This can include football strips, cricket and rugby kits and basketball tops. There will be plenty of activities on offer throughout the day, including Wii sport games at lunchtime, all classes will complete the 'sport relief mile' and there is a special sport themed lunch being served at dinner time. We intend to have lots of fun whilst supporting this fantastic cause and all proceeds will go directly to the charity.

Friends events

The busy Friends calendar hots up again this week with an open invitation to all pupils to don their dancing clothes and get on down to the Easter disco! The disco is booked for Thursday 3rd April and is open from 3-4.00pm for Reception and KS1 pupils, and from 4-5.00pm for KS2 pupils. Pupils should buy their tickets in advance by completing and returning the attached slip to the school office by Friday 28th March. Reception and KS1 pupils should bring their disco clothes to change into and staff will assist them and escort them to the disco hall and back to their classrooms for 4pm, where parents should collect them as normal. KS2 pupils can arrive and be collected from the hall doors. A drink and a snack is included with the cost of the ticket, but KS2 pupils can also bring a small amount of pocket money to spend at the popular tuck shop.

During the week leading up to Mother’s Day, KS2 children will also be manning a Mother’s Day Gift Stall each playtime. If children would like to buy their mum’s a little gift, they should bring their change (no more than £1.00) to the shop during playtimes for that week.

We have one more Friends meeting before Easter too. We remain desperate for you to get involved so please think about giving an hour of your time to come along and get involved. During the next meeting, the team will be planning for the next half term’s event – a family ‘Challenge Night’ – and ALL ideas for exciting puzzles, quizzes and activities for families to complete as a team are very, very welcome. Just come along to the Beehive on Thursday 27th March at 6.30pm – children can play in the setting during the meeting.

Easter Egg Competition

Yes – it’s that time of year again and time for the annual ‘Decorate an egg’ competition. We have had some brilliant entries to the competition in recent years, and it is always a tricky one to judge! All winners will win an Easter egg but the fun is most definitely in the taking part… Boil an egg (or two!) and get creative – you know you want to! Entries will be welcome from Monday 31st March.

Parent Consults

During the final week of this half term, parents of pupils from Reception to Y5 are asked to make an appointment to see their child’s class teacher about the fantastic learning so far this year. We will be distributing letters asking you to request your preferred times for appointments early next week and ask you to return your slips quickly as times are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

School Photos

Tempest photographers will be in school on Tuesday 25th March to take class and sports team photos. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school so that their team work can be captured on film!

Attendance

Our excellent attendance continues and I am delighted to see we are still on the brink of our target this year and the highest level of attendance at this stage in the year we have ever secured. The children are all aware of my promise that IF we manage to achieve our target we will ALL enjoy a day of Bouncy Castles on the field and I’m pretty sure they will not let me forget! I’ve got everything crossed – keep up the excellent work! Congratulations to Class 3 this week with a near-perfect 99.3%

Exciting news

This week, parents coming to the school office will have noticed a new face! Mrs Crabtree began her role in the office on Monday, and has had a very busy week getting to grips with things. Mrs Lucas, Mrs Lister and Mrs Crabtree complete the office team and her start sees us back to our full capacity – halleluiah!

Yesterday, Mrs Turner, Governor Jackie Moore and I spent a very full day interviewing for another new member of the Cookridge team – a Family Support Worker - and on Monday we have another day set aside to interview for the post of Inclusion Manager. We had over 120 applications for the post today and a high number for the post of Inclusion Manager too, so the calibre of applicants is very strong.  We are very excited about these brand new posts in school, as they mark a new era for us in our capacity to fully support the children and families of Cookridge and access the services available to children in Leeds. The successful candidates will join us after Easter and will complete the newly established ‘Family & Support Team’ alongside Mrs Turner, Mr Kerr, Mr Green and myself, a team who will work together to enable all staff in school to ensure our children are safe, happy, emotionally secure and achieving. More news next week…

Today, though, we bid farewell to Mrs Colefax, a wonderful teaching assistant and lunchtime supervisor. Mrs Colefax has been really good fun, and was a key player in the transformation of lunchtime play from an era where we had around 50 behavioural incidents a week (2011) to an average of 5 (2014), bringing the idea of playtime fun alive. She has been an absolute asset to us, will be missed by children and adults alike and we very much hope that she is able to return to us at some point in the future…

Book Fair

Don’t forget – next week the book fair will be open for business from Monday 17th March until Thursday 20th March. It will be open between 8:30 - 8:45 every morning and from 3:05 - 3:30 after school.  Children will be able to spend their World Book Day vouchers at the fair so please come and have a look at the fantastic range of books on offer.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Bailey
