Friday 7th March 2014

Dear Parents/Carers,

Another week has passed us by and the sun has shone for us, this week! On Monday, we welcomed author Simon Higgins into school to work with four of our pupils alongside pupils from visiting schools right across school. Wednesday was one of the busiest days I’ve ever known, with a group out taking part in a Speak-Up poetry event, a group out at the Leeds Museum, two groups out at the ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ theatre production at Ralph Thoresby AND Y4’s out swimming for the afternoon. It made for a quiet afternoon in school, but a busy day for the staff, many of whom worked beyond the ‘working day’ to enable all of these opportunities for our children! Thanks to them AND to all of our children who – as ever – represented themselves and our school very well, wherever they ended up for the day!

Speak Up 2014

The amazing achievements of children at Cookridge continued this week as four Year 4 pupils - Sam Bannister, Stanley Brigstock, Rebecca Harrison and Alexis Albentosa - ventured to The Grammar School at Leeds to take part in the Speak Up 2014 poetry competition. They spent a full day at the school working with a professional poet and children from all over Leeds , exploring poetry based on the theme of The Yorkshire Landscape and using this to create their own poem. But the day didn't end there!  The Cookridge Poetry team then rehearsed their poem ready to perform in the school theatre that evening in front of parents, pupils and a panel of judges!  The team did our school proud as they showed nothing but enthusiasm, commitment and determination all day and produced an outstanding piece of performance poetry.  I hope they are as proud of themselves as we are of them!

Sports News

Y5/6 Football- The team continued their impressive league form with a win and a draw over Adel St John and Holy Trinity on Tuesday night which keeps us top of the league. The 2-0 win came against Adel St John with goals from Liam Jones and Cobie Hey. The second game was an entertaining game of football, with chances at both ends, but it ended 0-0. Matthew Caines was in fine form in goal, not conceding a goal in either game, but Liam Jones was awarded the man of the match award for his constant desire, bravery and work rate over the two games. A special mention also to the whole team who are still UNBEATEN this year- well done boys!

Attendance

Despite a mysterious sickness bug in school this week which has seen a small number of pupils become ill very quickly indeed, we have managed to maintain our excellent form on attendance. Please ensure your mobile and contact numbers are up to date so that we are able to contact you in the event of an emergency, as there is nothing worse than discovering contact numbers are out of date during those minutes following an accident or illness. Remember – the month of March is a “Give it 100%” event across the local schools, with all pupils who attend school every day during the month of March being entered into a prize draw which includes movie tickets for the whole family. This week, it’s Class 8 who walk away with the kudos of top attendance in school, with near perfect stats on the door. Congrats to them!

Book Fair

As part of our ongoing LOVE of READING, we are hosting a book fair from Monday 17th March until Thursday 20th March. The fair will take place in the hall from 8:30 - 8:45 every morning and from 3:05 - 3:30 after school.  Children will be able to spend their World Book Day vouchers at the fair so please come and have a look at the fantastic range of books on offer.  Please remember that for every book sold, our school is given vouchers from Scholastic to buy more books!  Last year we raised so much money at the book fair that we were able to buy £300 worth of books for our school library.  Let's see if we can match that this year at the same time as adding some wonderful shiny new books to our own collections!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Bailey
