Friday 28th September 2012

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week and next, I have the privilege of observing numeracy teaching and learning in every class across school. This is fantastic in so many ways – it’s a time to really celebrate the great learning that is happening across school, recognise the things that we are doing well and identify the next steps in our developments. I have been very impressed with the learning I have seen so far – our kids really are working their socks off, rising to the challenges their talented teachers are setting them every single day. What has really impressed me this week is how well the new classes have settled, how quickly new friendships have formed and how the children are embracing collaboration and paired working. With our emphasis on children helping one another, offering explanations and not being afraid to ask questions, we now have approximately 30 teachers in every room! Great stuff...

Fancy New Library!
On Saturday, we are having a beautiful new library installed downstairs. I am very excited about this addition to our learning environment. With Government cuts in spending nationwide, there is much in the press about the closure of local and school based libraries. At Cookridge, we are choosing now as precisely the right time to invest in reading. A love of books is something I am personally very passionate about, and this is a commitment that the whole school community share. In the past 12 months we have invested almost £16,000 in books, and Miss Fowler worked very hard last year to create a school wide buzz about books. The library area is going to be a spectacular space.. But GOING to be is a very apt description.... we need HELP to get things sorted! If you are able to spare any time on Wednesday 10th October or Thursday 11th October for a stamping, stickering and organising frenzy, we would really love to hear from you!

Parent Meetings
This week’s parent meetings in Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2 have been very well attended. I am very grateful to the staff for opening their doors to welcome parents directly into the classrooms, and very grateful to you for turning up! I hope that you found the meetings informative and that the passion, enthusiasm and commitment of the staff team was evident for all to see. We hope to run more of these events in the future so watch this space... We look forward to working in close partnership with you in the year to come.

Homework Woes
As promised, the first item on our Leadership Meeting agenda this week was homework! Having listened to the matters raised by some parents, we have agreed the following amendments to the school wide homework practice:-

Homework will be set on a Wednesday to be returned to school on a Monday. This allows the flexibility to enable some children to complete homework in the early evening (keeping their weekend free!) and some children to complete homework over the weekend (keeping their evenings free!)

Homework includes reading (little and often – daily if possible, but just 3 times a week will be subject to school based rewards!), phonics follow up, a literacy and maths activity each week (one of which will be game based/practical or discussion based, and one which will written/recorded.) We will continue to maintain the very popular learning log tasks on a half termly basis.

Homework club after school on a Wednesday is available to allow children the time to complete homework and/or access our growing range of web based learning resources.

The DFE provide guidance for parents on homework matters at the following website. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Parents/Schoolslearninganddevelopment/SchoolLife/DG_179508 Their guidance is that KS1 (Years 1 and 2) engage in one hour of homework activity a week, LKS2 (Years 3 and 4) one and a half hours per week and UKS2 (Years 5 & 6) 30 minutes per day. We hope that the above diet of homework falls in with these guidelines, provide a range of opportunities for children to reinforce learning at home, and gives children a chance to showcase their talents to their biggest fans: mums, dads, grandmas, granddads...! I would urge any parents who continue to have concerns or experience difficulty motivating their child to get in touch – don’t struggle on in silence.

Parent Survey
We have received a good number of survey responses back in school this week – thank you.  Surveys should be returned to the school office by Monday 8th October. I will collate all responses and produce a summary report for you in due course.

After school clubs
We are in the process of sifting through high numbers of applications for the after school clubs on offer. You should receive a letter early next week confirming your child’s place in a club.  Clubs are due to start during the week commencing 8th October.

Friends of Cookridge – P.T.A.
Thank you to parents who returned the slip expressing an interest in joining the P.T.A. this year. The majority of responses returned clearly stated 6.30pm as the preferable time for a meeting. The first meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday 9th October at 6.30pm and will be held in Funtime. Even if you haven’t returned a slip – don’t let this deter you.. Come along! We need to start thinking about Christmas!

The first PTA fundraising event of the year will be a non-uniform day on the final day of term, Thursday 25th October. Children can wear their choice of their own clothes and bring £1 to donate to school. There is also a disco penned in for 3.05 (KS1) and 4.15 (KS2) sometime soon!

Sports News
The Year 3/4 football team have their first ever game this evening with a friendly match at Horsforth Newlaithes on Friday 28th September. Good luck, guys!

Attendance
Attendance so far this year is looking good – we are on track to maintain our improving profile which saw us secure ‘good’ overall for attendance last year for the first time in 5 years. This year – we want better than good and are aiming for 96%..... And so far we are on track!

Friday 21st September 2012

Dear Parents/Carers,

A busy week in school that has seen our children really getting to grips with their new timetables in their entirety. Phonics, reading, literacy, numeracy and topic work have begun in earnest and the summer holidays now feel like a long time ago.

Many of the class blogs are now up and running.. Keep abreast of what’s happening in your child’s class via the website http://www.cookridgeprimaryschool.org.uk/children/blogs.php

Homework Woes

I am always very grateful to those parents who take the time to give me feedback about any aspect of school life. This week, a number of parents have voiced their concerns about homework – the nature of queries including the volume of homework (too much!), the length of time children are taking to complete the homework, the children’s reluctance to complete homework after school and the fact the completion of homework this year excludes weekends. As I explained to those parents I have spoken to this week – whilst we are keen to align systems for homework across school, so that homework routines are established early and sustained throughout school, we are by no means aiming to establish a negative attitude towards homework amongst either parents or pupils! Let me assure you that I will take your concerns back to Monday’s Senior Leadership Team discussion and will update you on the outcome in next week’s news. Don’t forget – the parent meetings are also happening next week so if you want an update on this and information about other aspects of school – please come to the meetings...

Parent Survey

This week you will find the annual parent survey. This was completed and returned by a small number of parents in September last year (about 30% or 3 out of every 10 of you!) and I am hoping even more of you will use this as a mechanism to be heard at the start of our second year together. Last year’s survey results reflected parent concerns about behaviour in school, the sharing of assessment information and wider communication between school and home. This has prompted much activity in these areas this year and I hope that you have noted the benefits of this work. In order to shape the future work of our school, please take the time to complete the survey and give your views on areas which have improved and what our priorities should be for the year ahead. Surveys should be returned to the school office by Monday 8th October.

After school clubs

Our generous staff have agreed to lead a wealth of after school clubs and you should have received a letter outlining days/times and options today. Please return your preferences for school clubs by Monday 1st October so that we can get club lists organised and clubs started during the week commencing 8th October.

Baby news

The coffee morning this week was attended by a healthy number of parents and a good number of new babies and toddlers who took advantage of the new toys on offer. It is wonderful to get to know our children from such a young age and I would encourage any mums to make time in their diary for this monthly event – the more the merrier! The next coffee morning is set for Wednesday 17th October, 9am-10.

In other baby news, our Assistant Head Mrs Smith is currently blooming! For those of you who haven’t noticed, she is expecting her first baby in December this year and Mr and Mrs Smith are very much looking forward to their new arrival in time for Christmas! Mrs Smith will begin maternity leave in November, to return in July. During her absence Miss Glendinning will continue her role as class teacher of Class 6. Our congratulations and best wishes to Mrs Smith...

Brownies

This week, I have news of vacancies at a local Brownie group. I am sure I am not the only one out there with fond memories of our time as a Brownie, and many of our established Brownies in school reassure me that some things don’t change and being a Brownie is still great! This group meet at Cookridge Methodist Church, Tinshill Road, every Tuesday from 6pm to 7.30pm. Please call Pauline on 07834 817867 if you are interested.

Friends of Cookridge – P.T.A.

Cookridge Primary School takes advantage of a very successful partnership between parents and teachers to raise funds each year. These funds are used entirely for enhancement to the school environment or experience for your children – for purchases that would not be able to happen without the work of a successful P.T.A. Last year, Friends funds were used to finance, school discos, to subsidise (and reduce the cost of) school trips and ultimately to make a significant contribution towards the cost of our new ‘spiderman’ playframe which has proved very popular indeed! If you would like to continue your work with the PTA or indeed join the group, then I really want to hear from you. I am currently trying to establish a date this half term for the first meeting. Would parents who are interested please let me know their preference for a time to meet before we decide whether to host the meeting during the school day or in the evening - please email me and let me know at baileys06@leedslearning.net
Thanks.

Attendance

This year our target is 96%. Class 8 were last weeks attendance award winners and have spent the week entertaining Cookie, our school attendance mascot. I know we can work together to match the attendance in the best schools in the country in the shared understanding that pupil attendance really does have a direct correlation with your child’s achievement and future success. Please see the policies area of the website for a full outline of our updated procedures for 2012-13 http://www.cookridgeprimaryschool.org.uk/parents/policies.php .

Friday 14th September 2012

Dear Parents/Carers,

Our first whole school week has been nothing short of magnificent... We’ve had our first M.A.D. week, with children right across school thinking about the things that we do in school to ‘Make A Difference’ to our own and each other’s lives. Our first of many M.A.D. weeks has, this time, focused the children on the ‘Secrets of Success’, trying new things, working hard, pushing yourself, imagining what IS possible and never giving up are just some of the themes we have explored during the last 5 days – fantastic attitudes to take forward for life-long learning.  We have also seen the beginnings of our new provision for PPA cover, with whole class music, whole class iPads, Spanish, RE and PE now on offer, our curriculum is more rich and varied than ever.. Lots of opportunities to try new things and push ourselves!

Many of the class blogs are now up and running.. Keep abreast of what’s happening in your child’s class via the website

‘Self evaluation’...
At the start of the new school year, we are currently looking at all aspects of school life as we plan our next steps. I look forward to sharing this with you in due course. I am particularly interested in gathering parents’ views about our school. Next week, I will be circulating a Parent Survey and would be very grateful for your comments and feedback. I have also invited Mary Strode, a Leeds consultant, into school to evaluate behaviour in school. If there are any parents who are able to take part in a short chat next Friday afternoon about this aspect of school life then please email me or let the school office know.

Garden News
Last Saturday, Mrs Hawkins attended the Cookridge Horticultural show and proudly presented art work, written work, a vegetable and herb basket prepared by our green fingered children. She was thrilled when we won first prize for our veg box, first prize for our herb basket, first prize for painting and first and second prizes for handwriting... An incredible achievement during what has to be one of the wettest summer’s ever! If we can achieve all of that WITHOUT the sunshine, imagine what might happen this year.... Mrs Hawkins keeps us posted via her super blog http://cookridgeschoolgarden.blogspot.co.uk/ so keep an eye on tales from the garden there. If any parents or grandparents are able to spare an hour of their time to help us in our garden we would love to hear from you, either working with the children or during the tranquillity of the morning, once a week or once a month... Please get in touch.

We are currently collecting Morrison’s Vouchers for the "Lets Grow" scheme to boost our growing empire. If you or your wider family shop there – get collecting and pass them our way!

Friday Toddler group at Cookridge Village Hall, Moseley Wood Lane, LS16 7ER.
I am pleased to share news of a local toddler group on behalf of Mrs Warrior...

Friday Toddler Group for children 0-5 years, accompanied by parents / carers. We meet in the main hall every Friday during term time from 1.15pm - 3.15pm. Admission is £1.50 for the first child and 50p for subsequent children. This includes refreshments for adults and children. We offer a variety of inside toys, plus drawing / crafts, singing and - weather permitting – outside play too. No need to book, just pop in.

Parent Meetings
An enormous ‘thank you’ to our Reception parents who have attended our first parent meetings of the year this week. The Reception Team were very grateful for your positive feedback about both the meeting and the way in which your children have settled into school... Incredibly well, by the way!

A reminder that further ‘Welcome Parent Meetings’ are scheduled as below. Housekeeping news, information about the new curriculum and the work we are doing to strengthen phonics and spelling across school are just some of the items on the agenda. Please come along and learn how you can support your child during the coming year.

School Dinners
Pupil numbers taking up school dinners is higher than ever, and I am hearing positive feedback from our young diners every day! The updated menu is on the school website http://www.cookridgeprimaryschool.org.uk/parents/school-menu.php. Parents wishing to swap to school meals or vice versa can do so with 2 weeks’ notice. Please remember that children enjoying packed lunches are asked to take the remains of their packed lunch home with them. This decision was taken due to the high volume of waste being thrown away every single day - entire sandwiches and unopened (and expensive!) cheeses, biscuits and fruit. More worrying than the wasted expense is the fact that such a lot of children must have been going hungry in their rush to get outside to play. It is hoped that you are able to monitor the foods your child is eating during the school day and, where necessary, either encourage them to eat more! Thank you for your support.

Sports
The Sports Clubs have got off to a flying start this week with a rich range of different sport happening every night at Cookridge, thanks to Mr Gamble’s vision and Mrs Hyde’s organisation! The range of sports clubs on offer varies each half term and allocations for paid sports clubs were made in the summer for places at clubs right through until July 2013. Each half term, we will send you out a reminder that your child is due to start a club after the holidays... More information on the website soon.

The Year 5/6 Footballers start their new season with a friendly match at Horsforth Newlaithes on Friday 21st September.

Parent Contact & Medical Information
All families new to school must complete and return their pupil information sheet by next Friday at the latest. It is vital that we can contact you in an emergency and I urge all parents to inform us of updates to mobile numbers as a matter of urgency. It is also crucial that we have accurate medical and dietary information for your child. Thank you.

Parent Governor Vacancies
As promised, we are this evening sending home information about Parent Governor Vacancies which have arisen. Please consider your capacity to support the school in its improvement. Across the GB, we have expertise drawn from a wide range of industries and act as a diverse group of people pooling our skills, knowledge and experience. We are especially keen to add expertise in buildings, health & safety and liaising with our PFI provider into our group BUT are keen to hear from any parent who believes, as we do, that we can achieve incredible things with our school.

Attendance
We are back on the attendance bandwagon and this year our target is 96% Our attendance was UP last year on our previous 4, with 95.2% our figure to beat this year. Last year, the volume of holiday absence cost us a drop on our anticipated 95.4% in the last two weeks, sadly. We today send home the academic calendar for 2012-13 and would ask you to book holidays in the designated weeks. It is especially important that Y6 pupils are in school for national testing during May.
