Friday 22nd June

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week has seen our children utterly engaged when completing their end of year assessments. I am very proud of the children’s achievement this year, and their efforts and diligence were palpable in school this week as they completed a series of activities devised to help the teachers measure just how far they’ve come this year – and pinpoint accurate starting points for next year! Our Year 1 children have also completed the highly controversial new phonics screening test, introduced for the first time this year. They took it all in their stride and I am incredibly impressed with the number of children who have reached the threshold deemed as meeting national expectations. I look forward to sharing the details of our attainment in relation to other schools nationally in due course. In the mean time, well done to every single child and every single staff member who have worked incredibly hard this week... Relax: it’s Friday!

Class Organisation 2012-13
As I’ve advised in recent newsletters, our class organisation next year is set to change. We will be moving to mixed age classes throughout school and establishing strong key phase teams, each under the leadership of a phase team leader. We are about to internally appoint two additional team leaders to complement our existing management structure, and I will let you know which staff members will be leading in Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2) and the Foundation Stage (Reception) as soon as the process is complete. At this stage – pending those appointments - class organisation is as thus:

Reception - Mrs Fletcher and Miss Hobson

Year 1 - Class 1 – Mrs McHugh & Mrs Cairns

Year 1/2 - Class 2 – Miss Golia

Year 2 - Class 3 – Mrs Speak & Miss Streams

Year 3/4 - Class 4 – Mrs Dawson & Mrs Spiers

Year 3/4 - Class 5 – Miss Carroll (Miss Cowles is due to return in January 2013)

Year 3/4 - Class 6 – Mrs Smith (Lower KS2 Team Leader) & Miss Glendinning

Year 5/6 – Class 7 – Mr Maldonado

Year 5/6 – Class 8 – Miss Fowler (Upper KS2 Team Leader)

Year 5/6 – Class 9 – Mr Gamble

Class allocations will be made according to the class allocation policy and determined by age. I will be writing to you within the week to let you know which class your child will be in next year, and they will be spending the morning in their new class base on Monday 2nd July. Remember – there will be an opportunity for you to ‘meet the class teacher’ at 3.15 on that date and I strongly recommend that you ask your child to show you to their new classroom and introduce you. This will be an informal information sharing meeting and you are free to pop in for a short spell, or stay for the whole session depending upon your commitments. Younger children are welcome to attend, but I would ask you to leave pushchairs outside of school please.

Friends of Cookridge
A reminder that the PTA Summer Fayre is coming up soon, and we hope to see you all at the Fayre on Saturday 30th June, 2-4pm. As ever, there will be fantastic range of stalls and attractions and we are confident that you and your family will have a great day. The monies raised at the Fayre will be used to invest in what we hope will be a great new playground development installed over the Summer.

Class Photos
We hope that you liked the outside setting for this year’s class photos – with rain like ours those photo opportunities are extraordinarily limited and we were very lucky to secure a mild (if not sunny) day for the 2012 photos! Please return order forms for Class photos by next Wednesday 27th June.

Attendance
Our attendance this week was our worst since September. A combination of illness absence and holiday absence has seen our attendance plummet to 91.9% - well below our Local Authority attendance target of 95% this year, and sadly reducing our year to date percentage to 95.4% . Some classes in school last week were as low as 83%. Please do what you can to help us maintain the attendance figure we have worked so hard to accrue over the past 35 weeks. Holiday absence is becoming a significant problem for us. Whilst I appreciate that many of our parents attend university and may have completed their studies for the year, please be considerate when removing your child from school. We cannot hold places open indefinitely, and may have to take your child off roll if permission has not been sought for an extended holiday from school.

There is a bout of chicken pox in school and I would ask you to be vigilant for signs and symptoms to mitigate the spread of this infection. Children are most infectious during the 2 days leading up to the outbreak of the dreaded spots, but should remain off school until all spots have crusted over (that’s official guidance talk for you!) – typically about 5 days from the outbreak of the rash. The extent of the rash can vary enormously – from one or two spots to a full body outbreak - so please use your discretion as to when your child is fit and well enough to attend school.

Sports News
The Ubunye Cup was again washed out yesterday due to the torrential downpours throughout the day. A new date will be announced for this shortly. Next weeks Football Club on Monday 25th June is the final one of the year due to various competitions and commitments coming up. I would like to thank all children and parents for the time and dedication put in over the year and I hope to see all the children back in football club when it resumes in September. A special thank you to all parents who have helped with transporting players to and from matches - Mr Gamble couldn't have done it without you! Next weeks Netball Club on Tuesday 26th June is also the final one of the year. It has been great to see so many news faces at netball this year and it's been pleasing to see it expand to include a Year 3/4 section. Places are filling up for both Y5/6 and Y3/4 Netball Club next year which is great as we have joined a league! A huge thank you to Miss Fowler and Miss Golia who have run this club all year! Please ensure after school sports club forms for September are handed in to either Mr Gamble or the school office by next Friday, 29th June and make sure your child's name is on the form as we have received some forms without  names. If you have lost the letter, additional copies can be collected from the school office or please see Mr Gamble. The clubs are filling up fast so to make sure you get a place at the club you want- get those forms in ASAP!

International Cookridge Week – starts on Monday!
Next week will see our annual International Cookridge Week with various activities and events organised throughout the week which celebrate the wealth of cultures we have in school. On Monday, our Mexican visitors arrive in school and will be joining in with class based activities across school. On Wednesday, there will be a parent led assembly and fashion show and children are invited to wear traditional clothes or costumes. If your child would like to take part in the fashion show please ask them to see Mrs Speak at 12.30pm on Monday 25th in Class 5. On Thursday morning, our annual Cultural Cabaret will be held in the hall, and the afternoon will see the infamous ‘World Cafe’ open for business once again, with an opportunity for all children to sample food from the many different cultures represented in our school. Food contributions can be sent into school anytime during the day. (Volunteers helping serve food need to arrive by 1.15pm.) There will also be an exhibition of artefacts in the hall and these can be sent into school anytime before Thursday. Please remember to label all artefacts with your child’s name and class so that they can be returned after the exhibition!

In the midst of all this, we have artist Lee Threadgold in school making gigantic puppets in readiness for the BIG Olympics week, coming soon....  and any donations of sheets to help in the making of banners with Lee next Wednesday would be greatly appreciated.
I need a lie down, and next week hasn’t even begun yet...

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Bailey

Friday 15th June 2012

Dear Parents/Carers,

This half term has started as it will no doubt end.. Busily! We have lots to do in our end of year ‘business’ and plenty to do in preparation for our September start! Next week will see the final end of year assessments complete our Teacher Assessment picture for this year, and all the teachers are very busy completing highly personal reports for your child which will include clear information about their attainment and progress this year. Reports will be home with you on Friday 13th July. But let’s not dwell there: there is still much fun to be had between then and now! Our Reception and Year 1 pupils have this week begun their topic entitled ‘It’s a gardener’s world’ and have been captivated by Fairies! Absolutely brilliant to see girls AND boys absolutely mesmerised by this mythical creature, and the Fairy Gardens they have produced are extraordinary! Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 have begun their work on the Olympics, and are very much looking forward to our BIG Olympics Sports week later this term, complete with a spectacular opening ceremony which will see the culmination of a year long art project with artist Lee Threadgold. Year 6 are also rehearsing for their fantastic end of year production... There is definitely no sign of winding down for the Summer at Cookridge!

Jubilee – tastic!

Friday 1st June – our final day of last half term – was a brilliant day, worthy of additional mention. It really was wonderful to welcome parents and grandparents into school to share the afternoon with us, and I am very grateful to all parents and grandparents who came along and bore with us as we made last minute amendments to the program to host an indoor outdoor event! Greg Mulholland – local MP – also attended, and his tweet about our work on the Queen’s knickers led to an impromptu visit by the Calendar news team. As a result, some of our children actually featured in the evening’s news broadcast about Jubilee celebrations across the region! A very exciting end to the term – and the children’s rendition of ‘Land and Hope and Glory’ was a truly fitting end to the day.

Year 6 – mini parliament

Today, Year 6 had a special visit from Greg Mulholland. Greg has made 3 separate visits to Cookridge in recent weeks, and it is wonderful to see our local MP so actively engaged in the business of local schools, especially ours! Today, he was conducting a ‘mini parliament’ for our Year 6’s ahead of their visit to London next week, where the lucky travellers actually make a visit to the Houses of Parliament and get to see first hand many of the things they have learned about today. We are very grateful to Greg for giving us so much of his time of late – although rest assured we are not trying to influence your child’s political stance in any way!

Meet the teacher – date for your diary

In the next few weeks, I will be informing you of your child’s class teacher for the coming school year. There is a ‘transition’ morning on Monday 2nd July where your child will spend the morning with their new classmates and new class teachers. This year, there will also be an opportunity for you to come into school at the end of the school day to see your child’s new classroom and meet the class teacher, as well as picking up some key information about some of the ‘housekeeping’ next year. Please make every effort to be available to come to these meetings, as it is a great opportunity to get your bearings ahead of September and support your child in making a smooth transition into their next class.

Trust update

The Governing Body convened an extraordinary Governing Body meeting on Wednesday to consider the outcome of the consultation process and agree the next steps. Given the largely positive support for the formation of a Cooperative Trust with local schools, the GB agreed to proceed to the next stage of the process and a statutory notice will be published in the Yorkshire Evening Post on Monday 18th June. Please note - this does not mean that the process is complete and a final decision will be made following this second - and wider - consultation when this 4 week process ends.

Can any parents who are not intending to buy recently distributed raffle tickets please return unwanted books into school, as we are desperately short!

Sports News

Yesterday 8 children and Mr Gamble went to Horsforth CC to compete in the Leeds Drax Cricket Competition. Despite great team-work and determination, we sadly didn't qualify for the finals. There were some notable performances from Harry Cox, Holly Pemberton and Husnain Khan, who hit 3 sixes and bowled extremely well in every match. The children were a credit to the school as they never gave up and willingly shook hands and applauded the opposition teams at the end of the match.

Today, children from Reception-Year 5 have taken home a letter regarding our very exciting range of brand new after school clubs next year. With this comprehensive program of after school sports clubs, we aim to introduce our children to new sports that we’re hoping will inspire a new hobby or interest far into the future. Please take the time to read the letter and discuss the options with your child. Once decided, please complete the form and return to either Mr Gamble or the school office. If you have any queries about the clubs then please see Mr Gamble as early as possible or use the new school sport blog
http://www.cookridgeschoolsport.blogspot.co.uk/ to leave a message or offer any feedback.

Summer Sporting Dates For The Diary:

Monday 18th June- Key Stage Two Football Club.

Tuesday 19th June- Key Stage Two Netball Club.

Thursday 21st June- Year 5/6 Football Competition, Ubunye Cup match @ Ireland Wood Primary.

Monday 25th June- Key Stage Two Football Club.

Tuesday 26th June- Key Stage Two Netball Club.

Attendance

Our attendance this week was down slightly at 96.2% but remains above our Local Authority attendance target of 95% this year, with a year to date percentage of 95.6% This marks a further increase of 0.01% to our overall 2011-12 figure as a result of our excellent attendance last half term. Please, please, please help us to maintain this position in the next 5 weeks and resist the urge to book a holiday during term time, as tempting as the British weather may make this! Remember, permission for holidays in term time will not be authorised and your child will miss out on some of the fun activities and experiences that come with Summer 2 in a primary school. Those pupils who have maintained 100% attendance across the year (and there’s only 23 of you!) will be enjoying a special school trip before the end of the school term, and this year for the first time all pupils who have maintained a position above our LA target (95%) will be entered into a special ‘chancer’ draw allowing 10 additional pupils to enjoy the trip. Remember.. You’ve got to be in it to win it!

New prospectus

The postman on Wednesday brought us a very exciting package – a proof of our new school prospectus! We had a second photo shoot on Monday to try and get some outdoor shots, as our first two shoots fell on very rainy days! This time, though the sun was far from shining, we managed to get up on the field and into the garden – and the photos look spectacular. My enormous thanks to all parents who have given their permission for the photos to be used in the prospectus, and to all those children who offered their services and smiled their broadest smiles. The entire prospectus is based on the theme of ‘Making A Difference’ and the end result is really fabulous! I look forward to sharing the finished prospectus with you in due course.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Bailey

Jubilee at Cookridge!

Last Friday, 1st June we had an AMAZING day at school! It was our last day at school for a while so we chose this day to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and do you know? It was such a fabulous day I wanted to share some of the magic with you...

First of all, we got started with a special assembly which was attended by the first of our important visitors. The Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Leeds visited us in his magnificent uniform and told us a little bit about his role...
He even crowned our very own Queen for the day!! Rachel - you look wonderful. And Ziyad - you make a very handsome Prince Phillip!
We then spent some time in our classrooms, designing our Queen's Knickers (based on the Nicholas Allan story!) and getting our commemorative plant pot designed perfected and planted, ready for home.  Then it was LUNCHTIME!!!! Because of the rainy weather, we had to have our 'street' party in the hall... BUT it was still wonderful, and Mr Tate did a magnificent job getting the hall looking truly spectacular. It was wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents had come along to join us... If you look very carefully, you will see them... AND Mr Mulholland, our local MP who also stayed for lunch with us!!

After lunch, it was time for our BIG Jubilee Dance.... We had practised and practised and practised and when the clock struck one o'clock it was time!! We did it in 'odds' and 'evens' in the end, so that we could use the hall... All the odd classes first of all.... And then all the evens. Some of our teachers were BRILLIANT at it - thank you Miss Glendinning and Miss Carrol!! The photo is quite blurry because we were all moving SOOOOOOOOO quickly!

After lunch, we were back in our classrooms and some of our special visitors came in to see us. Then, at 2.15pm we were back in the hall for a very special re-enactment of the Coronation, led by Classes 2 and 3 (thank you Mrs Willets) and a special sing-a-long. We sang 'God Save the Queen' and a very beautiful 'Land of Hope and Glory'. Our talented Jubilee choir also treated us to some of the songs they had sung in Leeds Town Hall on Wednesday - they were spectacular.

Whilst we were doing all this in the hall, Calendar news desk arrived and they were filming some of our children. We actually made it onto Calendar news - fancy that!? I will do my best to source the clip and post it here forever....

Jubilee Day was very special indeed. Thank you to all the staff, all the parents and all the children who made the day so very, very memorable. We wonder if Queen Elizabeth will serve for another 4 years to be the longest reigning monarch in British history? We hope so!

Greg Mulholland visits Cookridge Primary School

Do you remember when our local MP Greg Mulholland visited us? He's done a few things for us lately...

First of all, he visited with ASDA to donate a Kwik Cricket set to US!! For US to play with and to use for many years...

Then, he came back again for our Jubilee celebrations. He joined us for lunch and everything! He also planted our commemorative tree for the Jubilee - I'm glad he was able to dig that enormous hole. I am sure our tree will thrive - be sure to look after it in our playground until it grows big and strong.

Greg tweeted about our Queen's knickers and the next thing we knew - Calendar newsdesk were on the phone!! They wanted to see what we were up to, came along and SOME LUCKY PEOPLE from our school WERE EVEN ON THE TELLY!!!! Thanks, Greg. Here's your knicker design... Very nice, too.

And Cookridge Primary are now forever on his blog - look!

So.. Let's put Greg on our blog in return! He's back with us in a few weeks time to work with Y6 before they go to London to see the Houses of Parliament.
