Friday 31st January 2014

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week we are half way through the 39 week school year, believe it or not! Time really does fly when you’re having fun and the weeks are passing at break-neck speed...

Time to celebrate!

Writing is one area of school where we can honestly say the improvements in the written outcomes of every pupil in school is better than ever before and with the focus, determination and dare I say enjoyment that we bring to each writing challenge it is set to continue to improve. Last week, Y5/6 welcomed author Alan Gibbons back into school and enjoyed writing Greek myths inspired by a real-life author. The stories produced by these talented 10 and 11 years olds were quite breath-taking, and the quality of the writing I have seen this week just within my own literacy group is simply brilliant, as a result. Y3/4 are currently focused on writing hilarious recounts based on the very popular Ice Age movies, with Reception and KS1 both producing top quality traditional stories. Not only are the children deservedly pleased and proud of their writing, the teachers across school are equally proud and excited about the way the children work their magic with a blank piece of paper and a pencil and often send me photos of writing as they are marking on a Friday or Saturday night, so pleased are they with the feast before their eyes and we are literally squabbling to decide upon one ‘Writer of the week’ for each key phase each week! If you haven’t seen your child’s writing lately, bob into class after school one night and ask them to show you…. :0) It’s proper good – but don’t just take my word for it!

Next week, classmates will be nominating their Learnatics by identifying the person in class who deserves recognition for their effort, dedication, improvement and/or achievement. This award is, of course, celebrated with my favourite lunch of every half term – a Dominoes pizza shindig on the final Tuesday of the term. We will also be awarding our very first ‘Extreme Reader’ awards to a member of each class. Teachers across school will be selecting a pupil whose efforts specifically in reading deserve recognition and badges, certificates and a personal invitation will be with those pupils by next Friday. The really fabulous thing about being chosen as an Extreme Reader is that those pupils will accompany Miss Fowler to a book shop to select the next raft of books for the library, complete with personalised stickers on the inside front cover... Look out for the ‘Extreme Readers’ collection in a library near you, soon!

Training Days 2014-15!

We have just two training days left this academic year - Tuesday April 22nd 2014 and Monday July 7th 2014. I have just set the training days for the NEXT school year, as below. I hope this helps with holiday planning! I’ll get them on the website ASAP.

Monday 1st September 2014

Tuesday 2nd September 2014

Friday 24th October 2014

Thursday 2nd April 2015

Friday 26th June 2015

On this matter, there is an e-petition which is entitled "Stop Holiday companies charging extra in school holidays" in response to holiday companies almost doubling their flight, hotel and holiday prices in the school holidays. This is not fair to those parents/carers who choose to make the right decision and not take their children out of school in term time. The petition is open until 7th March and the number of signatures is rising by the minute. Why not add yours? https://submissions.epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/46455

Sports News

Year 4 and 5 pupils headed off to Horsforth High School yesterday to compete against local primaries in a basketball competition. We split into two teams – A and B – with Team A coming in 3rd place (losing out on the finals by just 3 points) and Team B not far behind in 6th place. Mrs Wood’s special mentions include Millie Lucey - who dribbled from one end of the court to the other, snaking past 3 defenders to score a set shot; Aden Athar  - who scored a basket from an impressive distance and defended the team with vigour; Jamie Rice, Cecilly Mwashako, & Srosh Akbari – who kept up 100% effort throughout the matches and  played with grit & determination. In Team B, Sam Appleyard  - who was all over the court attacking and defending -  was awarded man of the tournament. Well done also to Abdulaziz Khalfan, Sara-Al-Salman, Alexis Albentosa and Charlotte Shields who played with great courage against much taller teams. Mrs Wood would like to say a big thank you to all the parents, grandparents, brothers & sisters who came to support Cookridge. It was a great turn out, lots of fun and we just know that we will be bringing home the trophies soon!

Centre Stage

Last week, I was contacted by local drama and dance academy Centre Stage and asked to publicise their recruitment drive for new talent and to share details of sessions available. There is a link available on the blog http://cookridgeprimaryschool.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/centre-stage-dance-academy.html

Attendance

Yay! This week we made it back to 95%! Nice work, everyone. I am well aware that this is the season for coughs and colds and chest infections and am always very conscious of the school environment which can cause these illnesses to pass readily from one person to another. We adults are not immune either, and there has been a red nose pretty much everywhere I have looked this week – classrooms, staff room and offices alike!  If your child has caught a cold, apologies, first and foremost! If you are happy that they are well enough to attend school despite their cold – can I ask please provide your child with some tissues and encourage them to use them – reminding them that coughs and sneezes spread diseases!

Class 4 have nailed it this week – hurrah!

I think it is high time we met for a coffee! In only two weeks we will be on holiday again so let’s make it soon. If you can be free on Monday 10th February from 9-10, I would love to see you in the Beehive…

Last word goes to Friends Movie Night – Wednesday12th February at 5.30. If you haven’t already got your tickets, hot foot it to the office next week as there are only five days of ticket buying left…

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope parents enjoyed the residential assembly led by Y4 pupils this week. The children really enjoy an opportunity to present to parents and it was fantastic that so many of you were able to attend. The Y4 residential was a fantastic success and the children certainly formed some life long memories during their time away from home. They can now add the assembly to their bank of memories – so thanks for coming!

Nits

Please be aware that we have an itchy problem with our favourite friends – head lice. Nits are an irritating side effect of putting large numbers of children into a confined space! Children happily play, work and share all day, every day and all too often nits quite literally pass from head to head. Parents should take advice from the chemist and can choose to treat nits using conventional ‘wet combing’ or chemical treatments. The trouble with nits is you can remove the nits but miss the eggs…. Which become nits again with 3-5 days, and so the cycle continues! Any treatment should therefore be repeated as recommended by the chemist or medical professionals. There is some good information on the NHS pages - http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/head-lice/Pages/Treatment.aspx. The advice is that you establish a routine for nit combing frequently. If you haven’t checked your child’s hair recently, now might be a good time to do it! If we notice nits in your child’s hair in the coming weeks, please don’t be offended if we ring to inform you. Thanks for your help with this matter.

Friends

Don’t forget the Friends events which are billed for the coming term. You need tickets for Movie Night on Wednesday 12th February (5-6.30pm) and get them by speaking to the office. Tickets cost £1.00 a head and a tuck shop will be available on the night.

There is a non-uniform day on Friday 14th February for a donation of £1.00. As part of our commitment to getting all children to try school meals, we are also extending an invitation for all pupils to enjoy a themed school dinner on that date – again please speak to the office by 31st January if your child would like to take advantage of this offer.

The Easter Disco is booked for Thursday 3rd April, with our favourite DJ returning for another fandango. Tickets will be available nearer the time.

Sports News

Currently, our children are enjoying some of the best PE sessions I have seen in all my years in primary schools. Mrs Wood joined us in September as a specialist PE teacher, an appointment we were able to make due to Government Sports Funding that was allocated to Primary Schools following the Olympics. The money is intended to improve the quality of PE in primary schools, and our use of funding is allowing us to make huge leaps in the quality of our PE sessions daily. Not only does Mrs Wood lead brilliant sessions right across school, she also works alongside teacher colleagues to guide and coach them in their teaching of PE – a subject seldom spoken of in my 16 prior years in education – and is also brokering some great opportunities for us such as Leeds United Football Club coaching our Y5/6 football skills. We are in discussion with schools in our locality to increase the number of opportunities for sporting competitions across the schools, making use of the good quality sporting facilities in the area. We will keep you posted.

Next week,  Y4/5 are taking part in a basketball competition at Horsforth High School. Mr Gamble and Mrs Wood have been hard at work training the team and we wish the players all the best next week. There will be a report on the action next week.

Dogs

I am grateful to parents and pupils for alleviating the difficult parking situation by walking to school and I fully appreciate it is very efficient to walk the dog at the same time as doing the ‘school run’! Please be reminded that, for the Health & Safety of our pupils, dogs are not permitted on the school site for any reason. Furry friends should be secured using the perimeter fencing. Thank you.

Attendance

Another week below our target 95% overall sees our year-to-date figure continue to drop. We are now ½% below our 2014 target of 96% but I am still optimistic that we can get back to our best. Can I please remind parents to ensure that you contact school to let us know if your child is not going to be in school for the day – a quick phone call on Day 1 of a period of absence puts an end to our worries and cuts down the time office staff spend trying to ascertain that a child is safe at home each day.

We have an actual tie this week with Class 1 and Class 6 both securing 97.3% attendance – Cookie and Bourbon will have to do the honours next week!

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week, in amongst our usual happenings, KS1 got their ‘Knights, Castles and Princesses’ topic off to a flying start with a trip to a real live castle. Imagine their joy?! We also welcomed our School Improvement Partner into school, celebrating the children’s achievements since she last visited in September. Mrs Lawson was delighted to meet all the Phase Leaders (Miss Hobson, Miss Golia, Miss Fowler and Mr Maldonado) who all very proudly talked about the fantastic progress in their phase during the past four months, and passes on her congratulations to all staff, pupils and parents for this great team effort. Here, here!

Mrs Dawson

After a period of absence, I am sorry to advise parents that Mrs Dawson has made the decision not to return to her role at Cookridge. There can be few parents of pupils of Cookridge – past and present – who do not know Mrs Dawson. She has been a valued member of the teaching team for almost twenty years and it is impossible to calculate the number of pupils she has taught during that time, but with an average of thirty pupils a year (at least) over 20 years we are looking at around six hundred! She is a very special teacher who cares deeply for pupils’ right across school and far beyond their time with us at Cookridge, as a ‘local girl’ she is still in touch with many pupils she taught many years ago – which tells us something of her passion and commitment to the job and to the children and families she served with all her might. On behalf of parents, pupils and staff, let me wish Mrs Dawson all the very best in her future career.

Parents of pupils with Special Educational Needs will be aware that Mrs Dawson took on the role of SENCO at Easter. Mrs Turner, Deputy Head, has now taken on the role of SENCO and is your first point of contact for questions about this important area of school life. We will be appointing an additional staff member to support Mrs Turner in this role and will let you know as soon as this process has been completed.

Friends AGM

Last night, the Friends group met to report their achievements during 2013 and discuss plans for the year ahead. Last year, the Friends group organised two successful discos, Mark’s Magic Show, a Movie Night, the Christmas and Summer Fair and through their magnificent efforts and your unending support are pleased to report a current total of £5,167! We are aiming to raise £8,000 and are about to begin talking to the children about their choice of new playground equipment that we intend to install during the summer months. It is very exciting to be so close to our fundraising target and I am confident that we will get there during the months between now and the summer, and we will all enjoy the playground equipment once it arrives. The beauty of Friends is the children have fun attending the events which accrue the money, and on that note….. Below are the next three planned events so get your diaries ready!

Movie Night is back! On Wednesday 12th February between 5-6.30pm come along to sit with friends and enjoy a movie. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and all tickets cost just £1.00 a head. This year, children should bring along their pocket money as there will be a ‘tuck shop’ open for business so that children can select their choice of drinks and snacks.  This year, we will be screening ‘The Croods’ and ‘Despicable Me 2’ and we really hope to see you there. Please see Mrs Lucas if you would like tickets.

Our final day of term is Friday 14th February and it is officially a non-uniform day for no other reason than we love them! All children are invited to wear their own choice of clothes for a donation of just £1.00. In addition, we invite children to one of our special occasion ‘one off’ themed meal when pupils who do not usually have a school dinner get chance to join us for a ‘Valentines Dinner’. If your child wants to take us up on this invitation, please see Mrs Lucas in the school office.

The Easter Disco is booked for Thursday 3rd April, with our favourite DJ returning for another fandango. Tickets will be available nearer the time.

On top of our plans for funding playground developments, the Friends group are also very keen to support the sporting endeavours of Cookridge and are looking to fund a new football strip and athletics kit for our teams. We are aware that companies are sometimes willing and able to offer funding for such initiatives. If you work for such a company, please get in touch with our Friends via friends.cookridge@gmail.com

Attendance

Attendance is on the rise and I’m delighted to see 9 of our 11 classes this week securing a ‘good’ level of attendance. Brilliant stuff, guys. Congratulations to Class 3 who have done it again, pipping Class 4 by this 0.1% lead that’s becoming a bit of a theme this year!
