Friday 18th July 2013

Dear Parents/Carers,

Hard to believe that we are days away from the end of another year! The weather has made for a sensational end to the year, frankly – from snow at Easter to the tropics in July it certainly has been a year of extremities. Life in school has been positively buoyant during 2012-13, the staff team have positively blossomed and the children have done you proud every single day…. I couldn’t be more pleased with the way that my second year at Cookridge has panned out, and I genuinely look forward to sharing our growth with Ofsted when the time does come: it is time to celebrate a community effort and mark our achievements.

Message from Chair of Governors

This has been an extraordinary year for our children and staff at Cookridge Primary School. Our school is going from strength to strength and we have seen that our children are successfully climbing their own personal academic mountain each day at school. Each and every parent and guardian has fantastic reasons to be proud of their child at Cookridge Primary School. The children are to be congratulated on what has been a truly fabulous year for them. It has to be said that seeing a whole school of children doing well for themselves is an unrivalled privilege to experience.

During this year, your school governing body had to implement some tough decisions to ensure the long term sustainability of the way our school operates. The uncertainty is behind us now, but I want to put on record my appreciation for every staff member at the School. Throughout the uncertain times a strong degree of professionalism was maintained by the staff and I am very proud of all of the staff we have at the school. In our role as parents we should rightfully expect the best we can get for our children and I believe we all do get an excellent school every day from all the staff at Cookridge. Congratulations to all our staff: we are very proud of you and the summer break is well deserved!

The new academic year will bring new challenges and exciting opportunities for children, staff and school governors. There will be some parent governor vacancies released to join our school governing body early in the Autumn term. I want as many parents as possible to consider these vacancies now in readiness for when they are advertised. It is a rare chance to be involved in something big and to shape your child's school. As a parent and a governor myself I can answer questions on what it means to be a governor. Please feel free to speak to me in the Autumn if you would like to explore the idea further.

Reports

Thank you to parents who have taken the time to fill in the feedback slips following the reports last week. It has been wonderful for teachers to read your very positive comments – it really does make a difference!

Y6 events: Bugsy Malone, Prom and Leavers assembly

On Monday, after a dramatic setback Bugsy finally went ahead. It was worth the wait, as the children put on a great show with confident, assured and professional performances, heavily punctuated with a whole lot of FUN! Wednesday evening also saw our first ever Leavers ‘Prom’. The children have worked really hard to plan and resource their end of year celebration event, and roped in plenty of help to make their seaside theme come to life. Special mention and thanks must be made to Mr Chris Tate (our man from Pinnacle who ALWAYS says ‘yes!’ who provided a delicious range of cakes, buns, biscuits and ice cream), Mrs Rebecca Herbert and Mrs Barbara Nixon (our PTA princesses who supported both the planning of the event and the organisation on the night), Mr Martin Walker (talented photographer who manned the photo booth and took some great shots of the kids) and Mr Michael Land (who sourced the fish & chips at a good price, and delivered them on the night). Y6 now have one momentous occasion to mark the end of their time at Cookridge – the Leavers assembly is at 2pm on Tuesday and all are invited!

Special, enormous, gigantic thanks must be extended to Miss Fowler, who has done a phenomenal job in organising all of these aspects of Y6’s final weeks with us and ensuring that 40 kids really have loved every minute of their post-SATS projects. Miss Fowler – you are amazing: it’s as simple as that.

Get involved – Come to Zumba!!!

Don’t forget - Miss Glendinning and Miss Carroll are leading a Zumba aerobic session for all parents on Monday from 2-3pm. If you fancy a go, please enter the grounds from the school gate and hot foot it straight into the hall. All you need is comfortable clothing, trainers and a little unspent energy…

Attendance

On Monday, 37 pupils climbed aboard the movie bus to celebrate their 100% attendance for the entire year. This is a great achievement as that figure has increased from just 18 last year, and 13 the year before that. It would be wonderful if we were able to double that number again in 2014 – so keep up the good work!  Attendance this week is once again lower than we would hope.. Please come to school on Monday and Tuesday next week – there is still much fun to be had!

Training Days 2013-14

Next year, in a bid to further accelerate our school improvements towards outstanding provision in every aspect of school life, we will be working in partnership with Beecroft Primary School, an outstanding school in Kirkstall. As part of the partnership, teaching staff have the opportunity to spend a full day at Beecroft, observing a normal working day. I am sure you can appreciate what a fantastic opportunity this is, as the opportunities to see other teachers teach are all too rare in the teaching world! In order to make this happen, I do need to change the date of the training days as previously notified. Apologies for the inconvenience – but this really is too good an opportunity to miss! Please note – training days for the year ahead are now:

Monday September 2nd 2013

Tuesday September 3rd 2013

Friday October 25th 2013 – now cancelled

Thursday 14th November 2013 – new date at Beecroft

Monday April 22nd 2014

Monday July 7th 2014

And so, we mark the end of another school year. It has been a good year with much to celebrate and I very much look forward to what we can achieve together next year – the world is our oyster!

Farewell to all our leavers and the very, very best of luck in all that you do next!

Have a wonderful summer holiday and I will see you all bright and early on Wednesday 4th September.

KS1 Party time...

KS1's literacy unit this half term has been all about PARTIES!!! They have planned the very, very best events for a range of Mr Men and Little Miss characters - and boy have they had fun! Today, all their hard work culminated in a really good party, complete with bouncy castle, magician and balloon artist, as well as a few drinks and snacks on the side. What a cracking, family, fun event - we hope you enjoyed it!

Have a look at some great photos via our Twitter...  https://twitter.com/CookridgePrimar

Friday 12th July 2013

Dear Parents/Carers,

Last Friday’s staff training day gave us the opportunity to reflect on the year – in particular looking closely at the standards pupils right across school have secured in this academic year. In readiness for Ofsted and just because we are intent on continually strengthening what we do, we had a great time looking at the historic 3 year picture, comparing standards in 2011 (our last Ofsted) and our latest pupil outcomes. It is brilliant to notice the great strides taken during the past 2 years. Key headlines include:

ü  Continuing improvement in Reception outcomes, with pupils entering KS1 with our highest average ever (just below age appropriate expectations) in reading, writing and maths

ü  93% of Y1 pupils reaching the benchmark in the phonics screening test (compared with 71% last year)

ü  Higher percentage of pupils securing age appropriate expectations – and fewer pupils below -  in KS1 in reading, writing and maths

ü  Higher percentage of pupils exceeding age appropriate expectations in KS1 reading, writing and maths

ü  Higher proportion of pupils securing good or outstanding progress throughout KS1 and LKS2 (Y34), and therefore a higher proportion of pupils meeting targets set for them at the beginning of the year.

To add to our joy, the DfE released the long awaited Y6 SATS results on Tuesday. The results confirmed our expected outcomes (phew!) and demonstrate a stable position following the improvements made in recent years, with:

ü  81% of pupils securing L4 outcomes in reading and maths, with all pupils securing L3 or better (a first!), and 84% of pupils securing L4 outcomes in writing (up from 78% in 2011)

ü  39% of pupils securing L5 outcomes in reading (in line with 2011), and 42% securing Level 5 outcomes in maths (up from 16% in 2011). In addition, one of our pupils successfully secured our first ever L6 outcome for us in maths – what a genius, and what a landmark for Cookridge.

ü  Pupil progress in writing is consistently good across school, with higher proportions of pupils securing good progress (in line with national expectations) than ever before.

ü  75% of pupils secured the L4 pass mark in the SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) test, launched this year.

In September, we will provide a full report to parents to clearly explain standards in our school, and what areas now stand out as priority areas for improvement. In the meantime, let me take this opportunity to thank every member of staff, every child and every parent for their hard work in securing our improvements to date. Our work is not done – we have much to be excited about in terms of our planned improvements for the year ahead – but there is time to take a breath and celebrate where we are. Well done and thank you!

Reports

This evening please look for your child’s report as it was sent home today! During the past week, I have enjoyed reading every one of the 320 reports painstakingly crafted by our teachers – and they are a lovely read which tell me one thing: we really have got fantastic kids! We enclose a slip for your brief feedback on the reports and the year – please take a few moments to fill it in: we welcome your comments.

BOOKS PLEASE!

We are going to be organising our class and school reading book stock over the summer holidays so it is fresh and ready for the children to choose from in September. We would appreciate you having a good look at home for any books that your child has borrowed from their class trays or from the school library. Books from class have a plain coloured sticker on them and school library books have a sticker with the genre of the book typed on eg historical, animal fiction etc. Please could all books be returned to school by Monday 22nd July at the latest. Thank you.

Bugsy Malone

After Monday's dramatic turn of events, with a bout of sickness that saw Miss Fowler stepping in to play Fat Sam and the evening show being cancelled, we are happy to announce that the evening performance of Bugsy Malone will be on Monday 15th July  7-8pm.  Children are to arrive through the main school door between 6:15 - 6:30pm to allow time to get ready. Parents are invited to go through the school gates and into the hall. We would love to see as many people there as possible! We are very sorry for this unavoidable chain of events which led to such short notice reorganisation and thank parents for their understanding.

Get involved – Come to Zumba!!!

Miss Glendinning and Miss Carroll are keen to set up a weekly Zumba aerobic session for all parents starting from September. The sessions would involve lively music, groovy moves to get you feeling fit and of course well-earned refreshments! To whet your appetite and gauge the level of interest we would like to invite you to a taster session on Monday 22nd of July from 2-3pm, please enter the grounds from the school gate straight into the hall. All you need to come with is comfortable clothing, trainers and most importantly bags of enthusiasm. We look forward to seeing you there!

STOP PRESS - CBBC IN LEEDS!

Yes, you read it correctly - CBBC stars are coming to Leeds for a 3 day extravaganza in July! The CBBC Live in Leeds event - which is aimed at children aged 6-12 years old and their families and will take place in Millenium Square on 25, 26 and 27 July - will be free to attend and is a collaboration between BBC North and Leeds City Council. Stars from some of CBBC’s most popular shows will be appearing at the event, and programmes including Blue Peter, Newsround and Wild will be going live from the location over the three days. The CBBC presentation team, including Chris Johnson and Hacker the Dog will also be broadcasting live from Leeds during the event. There will be a wide range of activities to get stuck into and it sounds like a fabulous event to get involved in!

Sports News

On Tuesday in the basking heat 24 Year 4 children attended a cricket day at a local sports club. All the children took part in a morning full of bowling, batting and fielding coaching before competing against other schools in the afternoon. Team A deserve a special mention as they won both their games comfortably with Joshua Whitaker, Srosh Akbari and Alex Collie among the stand out performers. Well done to you all!

After winning their group earlier in the year, the Y56 football team compete in the quarter finals next week. We got knocked out of the cup at this stage last year, can we go one better this time around? Good luck boys!

Friday 5th July 2013

Dear Parents/Carers,

What a great week in school! Monday saw my first Sports Day at Cookridge, as last year’s event was cancelled due to poor weather. I thought for one awful moment on Monday morning, when Reception and KS1 were caught in an impressive shower, that we may have to call off the afternoon’s event – but the KS2 children’s pleas reigned supreme and I vowed to go ahead. It was a great call kids – the event was a great success with any events undertaken, many races run and many points scored… Well done to all of you. The winning team for both Key Stages was the Blue team, but will their combined point total be enough to secure the whole school Sports Day Trophy? Results will be revealed on Monday…

Class Swaps

Tuesday’s class swaps were very smooth indeed. With the children all settled into their new classes by 9.05, I wandered through the corridors…. You could have heard a pin drop as the children clearly set about impressing their new teachers! The morning was a lot of fun as the children got to know their new classmates during arts and craft based activities and everyone I spoke to was “happy as Larry!” Zak Moxon’s response summed it up when he called for his Head teachers award at 3pm and I asked him how his day had been…. “Perfect..!” he beamed. And he meant it!

It was great to see so many parents attend the ‘meet the teacher’ sessions after school. Thank you for helping your child get excited about the next part of their journey – whether through presence in school, or talking to them about it.

Staffing news

This time of year is always one which marks the coming and going of school based staff. This year, we bid farewell to Mrs Pearson, Mrs Brookes, Mrs Hall and Mrs Harrowsmith and on Tuesday Mrs Hyde added her name to the leavers list by securing a promoted post at another school. Each of these ladies has a long history with Cookridge, having accrued around 80 years of dedicated service between them.

Mrs Harrowsmith is a friend, a school neighbour and a very caring teacher. During her time at Cookridge, she has taken on many different roles and possesses some real wisdom and expertise, which she has passed on to many a new teacher on the block. She is due to become grandma to twins imminently, so I think she may have plenty to keep her busy in the months and years ahead! Mrs Harrowsmith is possibly one of the loveliest people you could ever hope to meet, and we have been truly blessed with her dedication for all of these years.

Mrs Pearson and Mrs Brookes work as teaching assistants in school has had a fantastic, positive influence on the lives of many children all the way through the eighties, nineties and noughties. That’s a whole lot of kids and a whole lot of progress under their guidance. Both ladies have been absolutely brilliant teaching assistants, going more than that extra mile each and every day, and both will be sadly missed by us all.

Mrs Hall has met and greeted countless parents, staff and visitors during her years in the office and has answered literally thousands of phone calls, emails and face to face questions – probably each and every week of her long career – and her great efficiency in the office will be greatly missed. The smooth operation of a school office is not easily accomplished, and it is testament to Mrs Hall’s talent in doing so that I have not had a minutes worry about that side of the business whilst ever she’s been in charge of proceedings! Not to be left alone, after 10 years of service as ‘front of house’ Mrs Hyde will also be leaving us in the Summer. During the past two years, Mrs Hyde has taken on many additional roles and responsibilities and she has risen to the challenge time and again. This next move allows her to continue that growth and I am sure she will be brilliant. My personal thanks to both Mrs Hall and Mrs Hyde – you’ve been an incredible team. Last week, we appointed Mrs Ann Lucas as School Business Manager. Mrs Lucas will begin her career with us in September, ably assisted by Miss Lockwood. Farewell Hall and Hyde, and hello Lucas and Lockwood!

After school clubs

Don’t forget – after school clubs are released now for a September start. Slips stating your preferences must be returned to school by Friday 12th July, as we aim to get allocations made and letters out by the end of the school year. If you haven’t seen one – call into school and ask for one, as places are limited!

Next week is the last week of after school sports clubs. This includes all teacher led and company led clubs. Mr Gamble would like to thank all children, parents and staff who have attended, supported and run the clubs throughout the year.

FUNTIME BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CLUB

It is now more affordable to use Funtime Before and After School Club. At the recent AGM it was decided that going forward we will waive the current £10 registration fee – that means if you want to use Funtime now or in the future all you need to do is pop up and fill in the registration form for FREE.

Also as a SPECIAL OFFER Funtime are also offering a FREE TASTER SESSION which means your child can attend a session for FREE.

Simply complete the tear off strip and bring to the office or to Ann Sadler in the Funtime room to book them in.

Games plea..

If any parents have any discarded Nintendo DS’s / Wii’s or other game machines – don’t let them gather dust! Likewise, any board games that you bought that no one really plays anymore… We can make good use of them as part of Funtime provision. Let me know if you need me to take them off your hands!

Coffee Morning

Don’t forget -  Wednesday 17th July @ 9am it’s time for a coffee! Mr Green and Mr Lucas begin work on the Funtime facelift on Friday, so hopefully you will notice a fresh new look by then.

Don’t forget the Training Day tomorrow so school is closed to pupils.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Sam Bailey
