Friday 16th November 2012

Dear Parents/Carers,

Today we’ve had a very spotty end to the week with Children in Need day. Thanks so much to all those parents who found – or made! - spotty clothing, who baked – or bought – buns and biscuits, who donated loose change into our giant Pudsey bear and who, finally, demonstrated great generosity by giving to this cause. Our bun sale was a particular success, and children in KS2 thoroughly enjoyed their time on the stalls! It’s important that our children not only have a great day during these fundraising events, but also learn a little about the plight of others in need and the work of charities, both in our local community and beyond. Thanks to Miss Hobson for organising the day but also thanks to you: we couldn’t do it without you – so thank you.

SOS
Our next charity event comes hot on the heels of this one and I apologise for that but as a local cause it’s one I couldn’t overlook. You may not be aware that the Children's Heart Unit at Leeds General Infirmary has been earmarked to lose its surgery, meaning that very sick children and babies in our region will be required to travel to Newcastle, Liverpool or Birmingham for live-saving surgery. The LGI are holding an event on Friday 7th December 2012, asking every child in Yorkshire to wear something red “be it a jumper, sock or hair bobble” and choose to make a small donation to the Save Our Surgery fund. The organisers are seeking to not only raise vital funds but also awareness as to the unit’s plight. LGI are also matching up each school in Yorkshire with a local business who will match a percentage of each schools donation. More news nearer the time...

Staffing Updates
This has been a busy week for us, staffing wise. Mrs Smith has left us today to begin her maternity leave. She has just over three weeks to go before she becomes a mummy so it is most definitely time – all our love and good luck Mrs Smith: enjoy every minute!

As Mrs Smith has prepared to go this week, Miss Cowles was back in school on Monday getting ready to come back. Baby Seth is absolutely gorgeous and Miss Cowles has definitely got a heartbreaker on her hands there. Miss Cowles will be returning to school during the final week of this half term, but has decided to return to work part time and is taking on a role across school, so will not be returning to class based responsibility in the first instance.

Miss Carroll’s time with us was due to end at Christmas, in line with Miss Cowles return. I am delighted to inform parents that Miss Carroll has been persuaded to stay on as the Class 5 teacher: good news for us all! Miss Carroll has made plans to go travelling during June/July so will not be with us all the way through the year, but I’m delighted that she will be with us for a while yet!

Our final staffing update shares news that, after a period of absence, Mrs Laycock will not be returning to school. Mrs Laycock has worked with hundreds of children and families during her ten years at Cookridge, and I am sure many parents would join with me in extending their grateful thanks to Mrs Laycock for her support over the years. On Monday, we appointed Mr Green to be our Learning Mentor. Mr Green is very eager to begin working with us in January and we are very eager to have him in school working with our children, staff and families to strengthen what we do and continue our mission to ensure every child in our school thrives.

NWLEPT (North West Leeds Education Partnership Trust) News
Having been formalised on August 31st 2012, our Trust partnership with Iveson, Ireland Wood and Ralph Thoresby High School has got off to a good start. The Head teachers from each school have met regularly since September, and an action plan which outlines our focus for this year has been developed with all four schools’ individual developmental priorities in mind. A maths and writing focus have therefore been decided. We are now beginning that work, with collaboration amongst our maths and literacy leaders and theirs we hope to make rapid progress in the areas identified. This collaboration will see the development of a consistent calculation policy, the sharing of approaches to the teaching of maths and writing (including observing one another’s lessons) and developing awareness of assessment frameworks across the four schools. Miss Fowler got the activity started this week by observing Literacy in Year 6 at Iveson Primary School. This is an exciting time for us, and is only a starting point in terms of what can be achieved together.

Morrison’s” Let’s Grow” vouchers
We have collected 2,927 Morrisons "Let's Grow" vouchers and have put in an order for garden and cookery equipment which will arrive next April. We have ordered garden gloves, a mini wheelbarrow and cookery scales amongst other items. Thank you so much for collecting the vouchers as this really is a great source of much needed, good quality and free equipment for the allotment and our green fingered children.

Friends
Our PTA group met last night for a very exciting and well attended meeting which saw us finalise arrangements for the Christmas Fair on Tuesday 18th December from 3.05 till 4.30pm – put the date in your diary because Santa certainly has! We also pencilled a number of Friends events in for across the school year, and we look forward to bringing you news of a movie night (January), a possible January sale or  ‘swish’ event, an evening magic show for families (March), and a Strictly Come Dancing event in the summer – strictly for grown ups! We are hoping to continue the excellent work of the PTA in raising funds for our school to enable us to buy things that we wouldn’t ordinarily be in a position to buy.. But we want to have fun along the way so we hope you can join us!

Christmas Dinner
Each year in school those children who eat school dinners have a Christmas dinner day – a traditional Christmas meal as we approach this momentous event. This year, I would like to extend this offer to everyone, so that even those who prefer packed lunches day to day can – if they want – join in with the festivities for a one-off event. If your child wants a Christmas dinner on the 13th December, please speak to Mrs Hyde in the school office by Friday 23rd November so that we can get the food ordered and let the preparations commence!

Attendance
We are a matter of weeks away now from our first 100% attendance certificates for the year, and a good number of children so far have maintained this impeccable record during the 10 weeks so far this year. If this IS you, keep it up. It would be GREAT to have double the number of children attend our end of year 100% attendance trip at the end of this year – last year about 40 children made it.. Can 80 or more this year?? Our overall attendance figure of 96.5% is brilliant and I continue to be very thankful of your support with this – and many other – agendas.

Robin Wood Residential
Next week sees the second of our residential visits this year. After our first ever International resi last term, our Y5 children set off next week for 3 days at Dobroyd Castle in Lancashire. Mr Maldonado, Miss Glendinning, Mrs Hawkins and I are lucky enough to accompany the children on this visit, and we are all VERY excited. There is a very packed agenda, and the children will be enjoying archery, climbing, caving, canoeing and raft building, will tackle the zip wire, the giant swing and trapeze and at some point will have to face the ultimate challenge: carefully balancing to cross the Piranha Pool... More news next week!

International Visitors
Next week also sees our Commenius Partners arrive in school. During this two year partnership, teachers from our school have visited Ireland, Slovakia, Finland and Birmingham and now it’s their turn to visit us. 20 International Visitors arrive throughout Wednesday, and Mrs Speak has planned a very packed itinerary for them.

Friday 9th November

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back! The term has begun superbly, with the children bouncing back into the routine despite the cold and windy week we have had! It is fantastic to be stopped in the corridor, on the playground or over lunch by children all over school who are excited by their learning, their achievements and the wonderful things that are going on in their class. On Wednesday, I was accosted on four different occasions during lunchtime by very excited super sleuths in Class 2. They were almost certain Miss Golia had worn a wig and pretended to be Goldilocks, but couldn’t be absolutely sure – hence their questions... ‘Was Miss Golia in your office during our literacy?’ They were almost certain they’d seen a bit of Miss Golia’s hair...?? I thought Andre might pop, such was his excitement. Key Stage 1’s traditional tales unit has most definitely fired the children up, and I’m sure that the learning which will happen on the back of sooooooooo much enthusiasm will be astonishing. Watch this space! Happily, Key Stage 1 is not the only phase that’s buzzing....

Curriculum 2012
A full copy of the all-new curriculum map is now available to view on the parent’s page of the school website http://www.cookridgeprimaryschool.org.uk/parents/curriculum.php . Please have a look at the exciting things we have planned for your child across this year and as they progress through school. Reception are looking at Food as their science based topic gets underway, but will also explore knowledge of the world by exploring where our food comes from, and how food is used in many different celebrations. Lower Key Stage 2 (Year 3/4)’s topic on India is underway and again the enthusiasm for the topic is widespread as the children have begun to share what they already know about India and have even indulged in some Bollywood dancing, which will be perfected over the coming weeks – if you’re lucky you may even get to see some! The homework the children have produced in preparation for this topic is really impressive, and again the children have proudly shown their learning to their friends, teachers and even me across the week. Connor Fenton’s shoe box montage was fascinating – well done you! – and Alfie Palmer’s information booklet just sensational. Thanks to all parents for their support of home learning – you would know it is worth it if you could see the pride in your children’s faces as they show their homework off to the class!  In Upper Key Stage 2 (Year 5/6), the children have made a start on their historical exploration of Inventors and Inventions, through the ages. This fascinating topic promises to be an intriguing one, and will involve the children’s own suggestions, design and making of prototype products that should already be on the market….

As part of the innovation of the curriculum, we are delighted to be in a creative phase which sees us develop a curriculum model which is current, relevant and fit for the 21st century. As part of this agenda, we have also introduced E-safety as a core part of our ICT curriculum, so that not only are the children developing the skills they need to be competent users of technologies, they are also aware of the risks associated with this incredible resource so that they are better equipped to make the right choices, now and well into their future as world wide web users. Children in LKS2 and UKS2 will be learning about E-Safety this half term using a carefully selected range of resources which get important messages across – such as never give your personal details online. Parent and carers can access more information on the ThinkUKnow website https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/parentsguide/.

Inter Generational Choir
On Tuesday lunchtime, I stumbled upon another ‘something wonderful’ as I made my way down to the lunch hall.. A beautiful noise emanating from the community room.. About 30 of our children and a group of older generation choristers sang their hearts out as they continued rehearsal for the debut performance around Christmas time. ‘Santa Claus is coming to town’ never sounded so good! Mrs Fletcher has taken Music in her stride since September, and we are seeing some fantastic development of an already very strong aspect of our school. Mrs Fletcher has added whole class samba and steel pans into our UKS2 curriculum, has organised our visiting music teachers so that we now have full groups AND a waiting list, and of course she is the founding member of our first ever inter-generational choir. Enormous thanks to Mrs Fletcher who is filling our school with the sound of music, to the members of OPAL who are coming along to sing with us each week and finally to the children of the choir who are freely giving their lunchtimes to nurture a rare gift! You are stars...

Book Bags.. And Phonics folders!
I have been asked by several parents if we are able to source bigger book bags, now that the children are bringing home their phonics folders each day. The good news is – yes we can! The bags are produced by the same company as supplied the original book bag – they do quite a range – priced £5.00. So that we know roughly how many to order, can I ask parents who wish to order a book bag to complete the reply slip below and send it into school OR call into the office and put your name on the waiting list by Friday 16th November so that we can get them into school and start the trend!

Photographs
Orders should be returned to the office by 5pm today, Friday 9th November.

Children in Need 2012 : “Show your spots – let’s raise lots!”
Next Friday 16th November is Children in Need day, a day when children and adults across the UK unite to raise funds to support all kinds of project and good causes which help all kinds of children. We will be lending our support to this fantastic event which last year raised 26 million. Next Friday, please help us make a great day of it by supporting the following:-

First of all, children can wear their own clothes for the day – preferably something spotty in keeping with the Children in Need theme! Children wearing their own clothes are asked for £1.00 – ALL of which will go straight to Children in Need. Secondly – we will be drawing a gigantic Pudsey Bear in the playground! As you arrive in the morning, please help your child to place all your discarded coins in the outline shape. It would be fabulous if we could fill the entire shape, because coppers or not that will really add up! Thirdly, we really really want a bun sale – but we can’t do it without you (we only have one oven in school!). If you are able to contribute buns or biscuits for sale at first playtime, I’m fairly confident I can supply some customers! Children should bring no more than 20p to buy buns on the day. Throughout the day, children will also be doing all kinds of fun activities and we are sure we’ll have a fun filled day. There will be a wii competition at lunch time and any children wishing to take part should bring an extra 20p. Thanks in advance for your support.

Friends of Cookridge – P.T.A.
Next Thursday 15th November is our next Friends meeting. Much will be decided in relation to our Christmas Fair and now would be a really good time for you to get involved! Please come along if you are able..

Pre-school Christmas Fair
Mrs Bird has asked me to make you all aware of their Christmas Fair – coming very soon! It is on Friday 16th November from 2-4 pm in the pre-school room. Lots of stalls, bric-a-brac, decorations made by the children, cards, paper etc, chocolate, fruit cakes, Christmas cake raffle, games, teddy raffle............loads!!!!!! All welcome.

Donkey Sanctuary Winter Wonderland – Swan Lane, Eccup, Leeds LS16 8AZ
The Donkey Sanctuary is holding their annual Winter Wonderland on the 1st and 2nd December. This is a family event where you can ride the donkeys, take a sleigh ride, browse the stalls and enjoy good quality home-made refreshments. This is the sanctuary’s biggest fund raising event of the year and, as well as a good afternoon out, your visit will support a great resource which children across Leeds – ours included, as we make frequent visits to the donkeys.

Attendance
Another great week attendance wise with our third week (out of only 9!) where we have a class with 100% attendance – well done Class 1: you’re amazing! So far this year, our attendance is the best it has been for the whole 5 years I have a window on.. We are aiming for 96% on the year – and I’m really optimistic we will make it. Keep up the great work!

Thursday 25th October

Dear Parents/Carers,

Another half term draws to a close today and it with great pride that I acknowledge what a great term it has been. Our children have really settled into their new classes, formed new friendships, got to grips with new teaching teams, routines and ways of working AND managed to have fun along the way. It is important to make time each day to reflect upon what is great about our school and, without doubt, out of 100 things I could choose I would say that the smiles on our children’s faces is by far the best feature of our school. Our children are happy, confident, caring and simply beautiful young people who make every day a pleasure. Congratulations and well done to all of you – parents, children, teachers, support staff, governors – for all your hard work on behalf of our school this half term.

Shakespeare Schools Festival

Last Friday night was possibly the proudest moment of my career. 28 of our Year 6 children performed Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ live at the West Yorkshire Playhouse – and they were truly stunning. It was the first time that Primary Schools had been invited to join in with the Shakespeare Schools Festival, a festival which celebrates Shakespeare by working with 700 schools who ultimately perform simultaneously in 90 theatres right across the UK – and this year we were a part of it! The children represented Cookridge incredibly well to give a loud, confident, funny and talented performance: well done to every single one of you. Miss Fowler is SO brave to volunteer for such a project, and SO talented to orchestrate it all. Three cheers for Miss Fowler! Hip hip.....

Ireland

So, last Thursday Mrs Speak led a delegation of children and adults to Ireland to meet, face to face, children and teachers at our partner school in Swinford. This visit was unlike any other – a residential involving air travel, staying in an Irish cottage with a real log fire and Mr Gamble burning custard as the teachers wrestled with catering for 14, I’m certain this was a very memorable experience for them all! The weather was fine for a day at the beach, there was bowling and days in school during which our children mingled with our Irish friends... This unique visit would not have been possible without the dedication of Mrs Speak, our very talented International Leader who is renowned across the UK for her innovative work in this field. Well done Mrs Speak.. I wonder if we know anyone is Australia, for next year?!

Parent Governors Elections

Apologies for last week’s posting which failed to give you the dates for the Parent Governor elections – I wasn’t aiming to shroud it in mystery but it’s all added to the momentous build up behind this election! This week I can finally share with you the results of the election process and am delighted to welcome onto the Governing Body Simon Bannister and Mounia Gazanayi. I am confident that both Simon and Mounia will make a positive contribution to a hard working and dedicated Governing Body and am very grateful to them for offering their services in this role.

Eid celebration

On Tuesday afternoon, all children were invited to an Eid party in school where they learned about this celebration first hand through games and activities. They enjoyed party food and each took away a gift bag... This entire event had been organised, funded and managed by a great group of parents, led by our newly elected Parent Governor Mounia Gazanayi. Grateful thanks to all mums and dads who got involved and created yet another memorable event for our children, and to Mr El Sayed who led a very informative assembly on Monday morning.. Happy Eid!

Parent Consultations

It was wonderful to see so many of you in school across this week talking to teachers about your child’s learning and progress. I hope that you found these tiny pockets of time informative and valuable. The teachers have most definitely found them so and I am very grateful that so many of you took the time during these consultations to say a small thank you to the teachers – it really does ‘make a difference’!   If you have any feedback or suggestions about how we can make these even more useful, please let us know.

Sports News

Sports Clubs start the first week back and if your child selected one of these clubs they should be bringing home a letter today to remind them. The days and clubs are: Monday (KS2 Football) Monday (Y2 Active Club) Tuesday (Y3/4/5 Basketball) Wednesday (Year 5/6 Boxercise) Thursday (KS2 netball) Friday (Y1/2 Multi-skills)

Cricket In The Classroom! Classes 8 and 9 are venturing to Headingley for an exciting day on Wednesday 7th November. The day consists of classroom based activity linking cricket to Maths, English and ICT and work with PE and cricket activities. There will also be a tour of Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground and the Rugby Stadium included in the day. Again, children from those classes should be bringing home a letter today.

Friends of Cookridge – P.T.A.

Tonight sees our children celebrate the end of term in style with the school disco, the first PTA event of the year. We are very interested in increasing the number of social events the Friends group organise, are especially interested in family gatherings and are currently exploring a few leads – a magic show and a ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ event, to name just a few. If you have ideas for things we could be doing, please come along to the next Friends meeting at 6.30pm on Thursday 15th November.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Shasheen for all her work on behalf of our school PTA. Shasheen has invested hours of her time over many years, has been one of the pillars underpinning the success of our ‘Friends’ and is a shining example of a committed mum, born organiser and great team player who will be missed. On behalf of the school community – thank you!

Attendance

Goodness me – we end the term with another 100% attendance secured by Class 7.. They have set the benchmark high and are the class to beat this year! Our attendance 8 weeks into the school year remains above our 96% target and I am pleased with our starting point. In line with the new policy, I have today sent out letters to parents of those children whose attendance has fallen below 90% during this term. Our intention in sending these early letters out is to raise awareness of the number of days absence your child might be totting up, sometimes without us realising. At the end of next half term (just before Christmas!) we will be producing our first set of attendance letters for each of you.. green for great, orange for ‘ok’ and red where attendance is a cause for concern. Go for green – and encourage your child to be one of the 100% attendees this year! Remember, the attendance policy is available to download on the school website http://www.cookridgeprimaryschool.org.uk/parents/policies.php

Shakespeare Schools Festival

Apologies for the late night newsletter post... I'm just home after a night at the theatre having watched possibly one of the best performances I have ever seen.

After a day of Ofsted training looking closely at the intricacies of the expectations under the new Ofsted framework I've had just the tonic tonight - a night where our children truly shone on stage at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Performing Shakespeares 'A Midsummer Nights Dream', a cast of 28 Year 5 children who have developed a love of 'the Bard' through their participation in the festival since September and their performance of 'Much Ado about Nothing' in the summer, have just wowed an audience on the Courtyard Stage. Unfortunately, I couldn't take any photos so you'll have to picture the incredible scene. Our children performed with passion, enthusiasm, confidence, flair and talent that was humbling to see. I'll be genuinely surprised if some of our talented individuals do not pursue this line of work in later life, and we better start looking out for their next opportunity to get them in front of an audience.

Miss Fowler must be recognised, celebrated and thanked for leading this project. There are many teachers across the world, but few as talented as she. Miss Fowler is an absolute inspiration and really does bring the best out of every child - we really are very lucky to have her!

Thank you Miss Fowler, thank you Year 6 and thank you to the Shakespeare Schools Festival for allowing Primary Schools to participate for the first time this year. I'm sure they will recognise that this was absolutely the right move - and hopefully we'll be back next year with our next Shakespeare production!
