Friday 12th October 2012

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week in school has seen a frenzy of activity in the school library.. With a visit from the school library service to help our efforts, we have determined which of our current library stock is of good quality, and which needs to go sadly as they are too old to provide up to date information for our young researchers! With that mammoth task completed on Tuesday, we then set about a 2 day labelling frenzy getting all our remaining and new books organised into story categories. The finished product is rather stunning, and we look forward to opening the doors to our library soon so that you can see for yourselves just how worthwhile this work has been. Enormous thanks to all the staff, parents and – of course – Miss Fowler for their efforts in creating an incredible independent learning space! Keep the library name suggestions coming in – we really need an incredible name to get the library established at the heart of our school!

Tim Hutton – singer/songwriter

Thursday morning began with a real sense of fun in school, as we were joined by singer songwriter Tim Hutton. Tim is a musician with over 40 years experience who has written over 200 songs – including some for the Prodigy! He was in school working with a group of higher attaining Cookridge pupils alongside children from Iveson Primary and Meanwood Primary School, who spent the day writing their own lyrics for a song. Tim began with a great assembly where he demonstrated his musical talents for us all... Mason’s comments I think made his day as he declared “I feel awesome now!” after Tim had performed one of his songs. Praise indeed!

To be or not to be?

Yes, that's right, Shakespeare is back at Cookridge and this time in the form of A Midsummer Night's Dream. But this time, it's even bigger and better than ever before and is going to be performed at the West Yorkshire Playhouse on Friday 19th Octbober at 7pm. Tickets are available from the West Yorkshire Playhouse box office and we would absolutely love it if the audience could be filled with as many Cookridge supporters as possible. There will be four schools on the night, including us, who will perform a 30 minute abridged version of a Shakespeare play. This has been a Year 5/6 project since the beginning of term with some children as actors and others preparing marketing materials and props. The children have been working extremely hard and it should be a wonderful night and a once in a lifetime experience for them. It would be fantastic if you could join us!!

Millisa Morgan – chorister!

I am proud to celebrate the achievements of one of our Y4 pupils this week. Last Friday, Millisa joined a choir of over 800 people in Liverpool in an attempt to smash a Beatles Guinness World Record. Millisa was very proud to be selected and keen to tell us all about it on her return! No doubt she sung her heart out last week, just as she does for us every time there is an opportunity to sing! Congratulations Millisa – we are SOOO proud of you! Let’s hope Millisa joins our newly established school choir, who will debut their talents around Christmas time...

Parent Governors Elections

It is with regret that I inform you that the recent election for the positions of Parent Governors has had to be declared VOID. Unfortunately, it transpires that staff in school who work more than 500 hours a year cannot stand for the post of Parent Governor, and that fact actually renders Mrs Colefax and Mrs Gibbs unable to stand. To ensure a satisfactory conclusion to the election process, we are today circulating fresh ballot papers and would ask parents and carers to re-cast your vote, choosing your preferred candidates from a field of three. Enormous thanks to Mrs Colefax and Mrs Gibbs for their offer... and perhaps there will be a place for them on the Governing Body as staff representatives sometime soon! Apologies to parents for the inconvenience of having to vote again – please make sure that you do!

Parent Survey

My thanks to parents who took the time to complete this year’s parent survey. I am grateful for the good level of response, and also very thankful for the overwhelmingly good feedback you provided. You did, of course, give some pointers on things we can do better... In the past year, parental voice really has shaped some of the key directions we have taken so please KEEP TALKING!! The summary of the parent survey is attached for your information, and I hope that you notice our work in strengthening those aspects of school you have identified for improvement in the coming year. A parent version of the school action plan for 2012-13 will be available on the school website soon, and will focus some of the areas of improvement suggested by you, and where homework is concerned I think a parent group steering party might be an effective way of developing a consistent approach to homework across school that works for pupils, parents and school... Let me know if you would be interested in participating.

Garden News

A big thank you to Fearne Johnson (Leo's mum) and Sarah O'Driscoll (Willow and Asher's mum) who have volunteered to help in the garden. They have already started by tackling the weeds in our raised beds and giving it a good dig. We really appreciate them giving up their spare time to make our garden look really good. If you would like to join our budding band of parent helpers, please contact Mrs Hawkins.

On the morning of Tuesday 23rd October, Mrs Hawkins will be taking a small group of children out to plant bulbs in the community. In recent years, we have planted daffodil bulbs on Otley Old Road and on Hillcrest Rise, opposite the school. We are still confirming the location for this year (it won't be too far!) but we will be starting from 09.30 and finish around 11.30. If you would like to join in and help the children make the local area look stunning in spring, please contact Mrs Hawkins.

Friends of Cookridge – P.T.A.

We had our first Friends meeting of the year on Tuesday. Although the meeting welcomed two new members, sadly the future of the Friends group is dependent upon YOUR support. The group are small in number, if fine in form (!) and without new members joining in the fun, we are unlikely to achieve our goals this year and may even find ourselves without a PTA group at all, which would be a sad day indeed. We are looking to appoint a new Chair of the PTA, and are also in need of a new treasurer... If you are able to lend your support to this great cause, please come along to the next meeting @ 6.30pm on Thursday 15th November.

The first PTA fundraising event of the year will be a non-uniform day on the final day of term, Thursday 25th October. Children can wear their choice of their own clothes and bring £1 to donate to school. Friends will also be offering the first school disco of the year on Thursday 25th October, from 3.05-4.00 for Reception and KS1 children, and 4.00-5.00 for KS2 children, who for £1 will enjoy a DJ, drinks and a snack. More information is coming soon, but pencil that date in your diary...

Attendance

Cookie our attendance bear continues to enjoy a rich and varied lifestyle! He is a ‘good time’ bear, and the children all know that when Cookie comes to class, he expects a good week – be it extra playtimes, perhaps the odd party (or two!), extra sports, games, activities and FUN! He also gets to go home with one of his hosts every evening, and he has a whale of a time... He’s been bowling, bike riding and to the park, out for meals, to meet grandparents – this bear is treated like royalty wherever he goes! Of course, we all know that Cookie only comes to the class with the highest attendance overall that week. So far this year our attendance has been really rather good, and this week..

Friday 5th October 2012

Dear Parents/Carers,

The new library is a spectacular spectacle of magnificent loveliness. It is bright, open and has the capacity for literally thousands of books. We have begun the task of getting our newest book stock categorised and labelled, and have some opening events lined up so watch this space. Children have been invited to name the library – and our 8 cuddly friends who now reside there... a few have already eagerly submitted their entries! If they haven’t already, encourage your child to submit their entries using the slip below... It could be their Cookridge legacy! See the photos of the library on the blog http://cookridgeprimaryschool.blogspot.co.uk/

Craig Bradley
Today, we have had a visitor in school. Craig proudly refers to himself as ‘that poetry bloke’ and introduced himself in a rip roaring assembly to the whole school as the guy who plays with words for a living, something he calls the best job in the world! Craig writes funny poems about all kinds of things and worked with Y34 across the day, taking their current literacy theme of Captain Underpants as a starting point. Craig will be back in November to support our Library launch. You can find out more about him here:  http://www.craigbradley.com/

Cubs and Beavers wanted!
Beavers and Cubs based @Pinfold Lane have spaces for both boys and girls. Beavers is a fun packed, activity laden fest for 6-8 year olds and Cubs offer opportunities for skill building adventures for 8-10 year olds...  Contact cheryl.land@sky.com or 07939 211533 if your child is interested in joining. There are 2 family events coming up which may be of interest to you - a quiz night on the 20th October at Holy Trinity School (5.30- 8.30pm) with bar, a fish supper and games for kids and  a free bonfire and fireworks display on the first Saturday in November. Again, contact Cheryl for more information.

Nits
Please be aware we have several cases of nits in school. Nits are a perfectly normal part of childhood and commonplace in any school, but it is important that you remain vigilant about seeking out these tiny nuisances. Medical advice is that a child’s hair is nit combed weekly to keep the nits at bay (wet hair, lathered with conditioner and combed through with a nit comb, available to buy from any chemist). Once you discover nits, the treatment doesn’t change – wet combing is still the best treatment, it’s just the frequency that needs to increase to every other day for 3 weeks until all eggs have had opportunity to hatch... It’s gruesome talk, but somebody’s got to do it! I’m pretty confident you are scratching by now.....

Parent Consultations
Parent Consultations will be held in the final week of this half term and you should be receiving your letter asking you to identify your preferred time frame for meetings. Over the next 2 weeks, we will accrue all that information, allocate appointment times and get a slip back to you with an appointment time. Please return your slips as soon as possible as appointments will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. It is vital that you attend this important meeting, find out about how your child has settled into their class and how you can help them during the coming months.

Parent Survey
We have received a good number of survey responses back in school this week – thank you. Monday is the last day for responses to be received so get them in! I will collate all responses and produce a summary report for you for next week.

After school clubs
You should have received a letter about school clubs this week. School clubs start next week, so please make sure you know what night is club night and where/when your child should be collected. If you haven’t heard by now – you should have! Please get in touch with the school office and we will look into it for you.

Friends of Cookridge – P.T.A.
The first meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday 9th October at 6.30pm and will be held in Funtime. Even if you haven’t returned a slip – don’t let this deter you.. Come along! We need to start thinking about Christmas!

The first PTA fundraising event of the year will be a non-uniform day on the final day of term, Thursday 25th October. Children can wear their choice of their own clothes and bring £1 to donate to school. There is also a disco penned in for 3.05 (KS1) and 4.15 (KS2) sometime soon!

Sports News
Y5/6 Football- The footballers played in a very entertaining friendly match against Newliathes however we lost 5-3. There are some real positives to come out of this match; great teamwork, precise passing and there was a real togetherness about the team. Despite the score, there was some fantstic football played and a lot to look forward to in the coming school year. Our goals were scored by Nathan Brown, Jack Appleyard and Elliott Coultas with Liam Jones earning the man of the match award.

Y3/4 Football- In their first ever game, the new team performed well in some rather wet and muddy conditions but lost 5-0 to Newlaithes. There were some promising players on show and a few notable performances by Sam Appleyard, Connor Fenton and Morgan Carr, who bravely stepped in to play goalie at the last minute! The man of the match was awarded to Ciaran Noon for some excellent defending and crunching tackles! Like the Y5/6 team, a lot of good players and a promising year ahead!

Attendance
Attendance so far this year continues to be on track towards our target of outstanding attendance across school with 96% or more overall. Thank you for helping us to maintain this position for the past 5 weeks – and keep it up!

Our Lovely Library!

On Saturday, we welcomed Incube into school to install our incredible new library... We absolutely LOVE  it! See what you think of this incredible space, in the heart of our school.

This is the view from the upstairs balcony, and shows our library in all its splendour! It's bright, bold and beautiful!

There's even a tunnel from fiction to non-fiction!

There are three working spaces in the library... and I've already seen children making very good use of the quiet!
Our 8 library friends need names! They joined us on Monday morning and have been donated by Pinnacle, the company who manage our school premises, as a 'birthday present' to mark our 7 year partnership. Thank you Pinnacle - every library should have Bears reading Books!
We are currently organising our book stock into categories to help us ALL find our favourite books, and to incorporate our lovely new fiction books into our collection. If any parents can help us with classifying and stickering, put next Wednesday and/or Thursday in your diary and come along and help! We will be having our 'grand opening' events next half term so watch this space...

We have also asked the children to come up with a new name for the library and each one of our 8 library friends in the picture above. Every bear needs a name, and we cannot call our library 'the library' for ever so get thinking! Entries should be passed to the school office as soon as possible!

Friday 28th September 2012

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week and next, I have the privilege of observing numeracy teaching and learning in every class across school. This is fantastic in so many ways – it’s a time to really celebrate the great learning that is happening across school, recognise the things that we are doing well and identify the next steps in our developments. I have been very impressed with the learning I have seen so far – our kids really are working their socks off, rising to the challenges their talented teachers are setting them every single day. What has really impressed me this week is how well the new classes have settled, how quickly new friendships have formed and how the children are embracing collaboration and paired working. With our emphasis on children helping one another, offering explanations and not being afraid to ask questions, we now have approximately 30 teachers in every room! Great stuff...

Fancy New Library!
On Saturday, we are having a beautiful new library installed downstairs. I am very excited about this addition to our learning environment. With Government cuts in spending nationwide, there is much in the press about the closure of local and school based libraries. At Cookridge, we are choosing now as precisely the right time to invest in reading. A love of books is something I am personally very passionate about, and this is a commitment that the whole school community share. In the past 12 months we have invested almost £16,000 in books, and Miss Fowler worked very hard last year to create a school wide buzz about books. The library area is going to be a spectacular space.. But GOING to be is a very apt description.... we need HELP to get things sorted! If you are able to spare any time on Wednesday 10th October or Thursday 11th October for a stamping, stickering and organising frenzy, we would really love to hear from you!

Parent Meetings
This week’s parent meetings in Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2 have been very well attended. I am very grateful to the staff for opening their doors to welcome parents directly into the classrooms, and very grateful to you for turning up! I hope that you found the meetings informative and that the passion, enthusiasm and commitment of the staff team was evident for all to see. We hope to run more of these events in the future so watch this space... We look forward to working in close partnership with you in the year to come.

Homework Woes
As promised, the first item on our Leadership Meeting agenda this week was homework! Having listened to the matters raised by some parents, we have agreed the following amendments to the school wide homework practice:-

Homework will be set on a Wednesday to be returned to school on a Monday. This allows the flexibility to enable some children to complete homework in the early evening (keeping their weekend free!) and some children to complete homework over the weekend (keeping their evenings free!)

Homework includes reading (little and often – daily if possible, but just 3 times a week will be subject to school based rewards!), phonics follow up, a literacy and maths activity each week (one of which will be game based/practical or discussion based, and one which will written/recorded.) We will continue to maintain the very popular learning log tasks on a half termly basis.

Homework club after school on a Wednesday is available to allow children the time to complete homework and/or access our growing range of web based learning resources.

The DFE provide guidance for parents on homework matters at the following website. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Parents/Schoolslearninganddevelopment/SchoolLife/DG_179508 Their guidance is that KS1 (Years 1 and 2) engage in one hour of homework activity a week, LKS2 (Years 3 and 4) one and a half hours per week and UKS2 (Years 5 & 6) 30 minutes per day. We hope that the above diet of homework falls in with these guidelines, provide a range of opportunities for children to reinforce learning at home, and gives children a chance to showcase their talents to their biggest fans: mums, dads, grandmas, granddads...! I would urge any parents who continue to have concerns or experience difficulty motivating their child to get in touch – don’t struggle on in silence.

Parent Survey
We have received a good number of survey responses back in school this week – thank you.  Surveys should be returned to the school office by Monday 8th October. I will collate all responses and produce a summary report for you in due course.

After school clubs
We are in the process of sifting through high numbers of applications for the after school clubs on offer. You should receive a letter early next week confirming your child’s place in a club.  Clubs are due to start during the week commencing 8th October.

Friends of Cookridge – P.T.A.
Thank you to parents who returned the slip expressing an interest in joining the P.T.A. this year. The majority of responses returned clearly stated 6.30pm as the preferable time for a meeting.

Sports News
The Year 3/4 football team have their first ever game this evening with a friendly match at Horsforth Newlaithes on Friday 28th September. Good luck, guys!

Attendance
Attendance so far this year is looking good – we are on track to maintain our improving profile which saw us secure ‘good’ overall for attendance last year for the first time in 5 years. This year – we want better than good and are aiming for 96%..... And so far we are on track!
